I was going for a USAF/IDF "mixmaster" carbine look here. Got the A1/C7 upper receiver a few years ago for $50 (bought three, shoulda bought ten), a BCG from PSA for about $70 during one of their sales, and the Bushmaster 14.5" barrel with pinned/welded flash hider for $130 last week from Numrich.

I was going to build a rifle almost exactly like that. I bought a couple of Old School A1/A2 Uppers really cheap from a local pawn shop and had plenty of furniture around and some cheap Anderson lowers....I even ordered the same barrels you got- btw, on the two I built, the front sight towers are canted- probably why they were at Numrich so cheap.....I was able to get them zeroed with irons but it's not pretty, both guns now have Vortex Sparc II's on them so it's just backup anyway. If I had known that originally, I probably would have bought a Faxon instead... You went to the trouble of putting a sling swivel on I see, I just used a couple of barrel bands off M4's I had lying around and called it good.
Anyway, I ended up selling off the uppers I had- some people will pay STOOPID money for them and instead built them on some blem flat tops. The difference between what I paid for the uppers and what I spent on the flat tops vs. what the A1/A2 sold for drove the cost of the whole build down to almost nothing....Great cheap beater/loaner rifle builds. |
