I want to build an ar-15 with a mid length gas system. Chambered in 20 practical..will it run well with a 20" barrel

I got a really good deal on a 9.5" Danial Defense lite rail ..there my favorite..and I have an AR-15 carcass crying to be brought back to life..I thought it would be a cool combo..light weight, fast , accurate..then I found out the best barrel length is 22-24" for the 20 practical..so I thought I would try to push 20" with a mid length gas system. Black hole weaponry offers a 20" with mid length gas system, but the guy said I would need to mess around with my hand loads to get it functioning properly..just wondering if anyone has done this and how is it working out for you
