First post here
I've decided I would like to try and build an ar15 that will be mostly for fun but that will work for hunting and self defense if needed. I haven't done anything with an ar except own a couple and shoot them as much as I can so assume I know nothing about them. I'm thinking of a 300blk with a 9" barrel that can take subs and supers with and without a suppressor. Here is what I've come up so far, don't hesitate to criticize, that is after all why I joined here and am posting. The end goal is hands down reliability, looks and to a point accuracy are a not close at all second. Ballistic Advantage 9" barrel with front sight gas block Aero Precision stripped upper and lower RRA single stage trigger Daniel Defense chrome plated bcg Phase 5 buffer tube with components YHM Key mod 4.25 handguards Flaming pig muzzle break BCM carry handle sight Please recommend anything you'd do otherwise. No plan for a sbr, if I want to visit my sister in Oklahoma I don't plan on telling the ATF. Thanks, Drew Edit to add: recommend a sling/attachment? |

Welcome. For a first build You've got good taste. I've listed comments below in red.

First post here I've decided I would like to try and build an ar15 that will be mostly for fun but that will work for hunting and self defense if needed. I haven't done anything with an ar except own a couple and shoot them as much as I can so assume I know nothing about them. - Short 300BLK rifles are a blast. You still get decent velocity with supers even with a shorter barrel, so some people really enjoy hunting with them. IMO, for self defense in the home, I would recommend a shotgun first, and a handgun caliber second. Unless you're hand loading, I don't like the potential of overpenetration with supers and the lack of expansion with subs. Ballistic Advantage 9" barrel with front sight gas block - This is a preference, but I would skip the Front Sight in favor of a low profile gas block. You will have more rail options that way, and the BUIS options are extensive now. Aero Precision stripped upper and lower - They make good products. Only reason to change would be if you wanted something specific engraved/style from a certain manufacturer. RRA single stage trigger - If the purpose of the build is fun, hunting, and self defense, I'd stick to GI FCG for the KISS principle. It will work when you need it to. Daniel Defense chrome plated bcg - Best coatings for BCG are Nickel Teflon and Nickel Boron. I wouldn't pay extra unless it met one of those standards. Phase 5 buffer tube with components - Good starting point. If you ever do apply for a can and an SBR, you can shoot it with the pistol tube while you wait. YHM Key mod 4.25 handguards - I'd go for a rail system for modularity and style over old style handguards. But that is a style decision. Are you ever going to run accessories? Flaming pig muzzle break - Noveske makes good stuff, and that will fit under most rails. BCM carry handle sight - Again, style choice, but i prefer the options a flattop offers me for optics, BUIS, and accessories. Please recommend anything you'd do otherwise. No plan for a sbr, if I want to visit my sister in Oklahoma I don't plan on telling the ATF. - All that is required for interstate travel is a form submitted once a year for a 364 day time period. Its a 300BLK, trust me, it will call to you to suppress and SBR it. Thanks, Drew Edit to add: recommend a sling/attachment? - LWRC makes a dual QD end plate that I like. I think Magpul makes a single QD one. Both would work for single point slings. If you want one up front, I'd use a rail mounted QD point. |

Thank you for the reply. I like the look of old style sights on an ar, and realistically for this round I don't see myself shooting much better with an optical at effective ranges.
I meant rra lower control single stage parts kit, am I wrong in thinking it'll be a complete lower after assembly? Is the YHM handguard not a rail system? Their website makes it sound like it is... As far as accessories I realistically only see myself getting a light and maybe one of those angled grips that keeps showing up in the pistol picture thread. I've read sooo much about pistol vs rifle vs shotgun for home defense I'm not touchin that one haha, I have a 1911 and 590a1 at the house so when that argument is settled I'll be set after this. Also I understand lehigh makes a pretty fancy sub SD round. As for over penetration the kids room is in an addition with an old exterior wall and a couple interior walls away. I can't see any of my neighbors house either. Drew |

Well if you like the looks of the old style I'd say you are well on your way. Even with a shorty your ranges are better than you think, but my eyes suck so I always prefer an optic.
When you said handguard I was thinking you meant M4 style drop-in handguards. Old school style = Smooth M4 style. Cool look, but no accessories. - Or you go the drop-in rail route for the lights and AVG. Just can't beat 00 Buck for home defense IMO. |
