The customizing of my PSA midlength pin-together is proceeding slowly. The next step is replacing the handguard. Is there any love for units in the Firefield, Leapers UTG, NcStar, Barska price point? If you're using these, how are they holding up for you?
My current handguard if of the cylindrical GI variety, and I just don't care for it. I'd also like to add a light, and have the option to tack other ignorant stuff on as well. The current guard seems to measure about 8 1/2". Color is not a consideration; I have no fear of painting the parts. I'll be keeping the GI front sight for now, and using an optic. I might consider mounting a new gas block and changing to a folding front sight in the future. The main thing now is get rid of the soup can that currently shrouds my barrel. Thanks in advance for your help! |

I have bought no name hand guards off ebay and haven't been disappointed for my purposes yet. All pistol builds. Most cost $25, but once I splurged and paid $42 for one... Are those the no-name, keymod style handguards? I'm looking for cheap handguards for my 9mm AR pistol I'm building. I'd love to go with an MI handguard, but I just can't afford them right now. |

UTG pro Slim line
Seekens Precision Midwest Industries all of stuff in that price point, but if your going to go through the work, I would change out the gas block and front sight now, no point it buying another rail later. You can find low pro gas blocks in the $20-30 range, you can find magpul MBUS gen2 front sights on sale for $30 from time to time. |

Lots of solid advise so far OP. I too would replace the gas block (low profile) now and get the handguard you want and be done with it. Don't buy twice.
I have the UTG Pro Super Slim (15") on a .22LR build and it's very solid. I like it a lot. I put a UTG Pro Quad rail (9") on my son's .22LR and that too seems very solid. I have no experience with the new Aero precision quantum but it peeked my interest when I got the email. I may consider one of them some day. |

Matrix-Arms
Shorter versions are lower priced - I picked up a 15" Victor for about $75 including shipping from www.chandlerhardwoods.com but note that they require a very small gas block and have a 1.3" inside diameter, which may or may not limit your choice of muzzle device. The barrel nut is not timed with the gas tube, so that's a plus for me. There really isn't an anti-rotation mechanism, but in the reviews I've read that hasn't been a problem. I don't have enough time with it to know. CHAD |

I bought a no name 15" free float Keymod rail from Amazon for $60. It is one of the super slim style rails. I have to say that I am thouroughly impressed with it. I think it is as good as alot of the more expensive brands on the market. For fun, could you dudes start a thread about this, and maybe put it through a little 'stress' testing to see how it fares? This would be a valuable addition to the content here because the no-name foreign made items are generally frowned upon. By frowned upon I mean torched and ridiculed ;) I am also one of those --> inclined to try items like this <--, and it would be nice to have an open conversation going! CHAD |

I still have a utg drop in rail on my m4, it's OK, but heavy and ugly. I just checked and a utg midlength rail is $60~, for that money save $40~ more and buy a Troy or something. I've bought a lot of Chinese crap that had rails so out of spec that accessories won't fit. |

CHAD No disrespect meant here, but I dont see the need to "stress test" the handguard on my rifle. My rifle is not something that is going into battle in Afghanistan or Iraq, so I dont really need the "high quality" shit that alot of people on here are so willing to spend money on. My rifle works for its intended purpouse, which is a home defense/range toy. Maybe Im missing something here. What does a more expensive rail get you? Better Quality? Alright........ Define what quality is. Ask that to everyone on these forums, and most people will have a different answer. At the end of the day, the rail I chose works for the intended purpouse. It may be a "piece of chinese shit", but it works.... Ive put over 4000 rounds through this gun, and have had no issues with anything on it. Stress test...... funny one.... Dont take my reply here personally. |

The Amazon handguard I purchased doesn't list a country of origin but unfortunately i'm sure it'll disappointingly be chinese. There are occasions when you just need something to get by with until you can afford the American made $150+ rail/handguard. (Impatience is a bisnich) I'd rather splurge a little for a better barrel and BCG than to put that $$ towards a handguard. YMMV |

Dont take my reply here personally. Not personal at all. 4000 rounds. That's a stress test passed in my book I think the made in USA is a big issue for many, and those rifles generally with the most use and abuse have more expensive rail/parts. I bought Matrix, because it was the lowest price point for a USA rail. Not super popular or hip either. It also does not have the look I wanted that I found on a foreign eBay item. That being said, a lot of guys who are diehard on AR parts own foreign mil surplus rifles and handguns, which are fine.. No one calls 911 on a USA made cell phone, or purchased items from LaRue via a USA made computer. Somewhere there is a sensible balance point. CHAD |

If you just want to add stuff, get a Magpul MOE <a href="http://s13.photobucket.com/user/SJAMIESON/media/Misc%20Guns/LMT_PSA_rs_zpstuo1dmaz.jpg.html" target="_blank">http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a287/SJAMIESON/Misc%20Guns/LMT_PSA_rs_zpstuo1dmaz.jpg</a> This. Bought my MOE sets before I really researched options, and I'm happy with them. You can hang all the same stuff off them as a quad rail and they're made in the US. |

Unless you absolutely need freefloat for precision or other reasons, there's nothing wrong w/Magpul's MOE or newer SL handguards. Tomac

From my own experience...................
I went cheap on all the furniture & only spent real $$$$ on the barrel & BCG. Even that was very cost effective. There is some very good stuff out there if you know where to look. EE, blemished, sales, UTG, all GTG.There is a sale on Faxon Barrels right now. http://www.blackrivertactical.com/concrete5/sale/#!/18-5-56-Gunner-Light-profile-barrel-4150-CMV-QPQ/p/52127855 Don't settle for any Ebay chit. Just take your time & look around. It's out there. I built a much better gun via the mail than my local gun store sells off the shelf for 4x the price. If I can do it, anyone can. Good Luck! |
| I'm kind of thinking about getting one of those $25 7" ebay quad rails now. Since they're 1.8" ID my form 1 suppressor will fit inside it. Too bad the cheap keymod ones weren't also a 1.8" ID. That plus a manta tac-wrap would be ideal for what I was aiming for with this gun. |

I've gone the cheap route before - never again. It doesn't actually save you any money because the garbage will need to be replaced.
Poor metal quality means threads strip easily, or don't stay torqued. Cheap specs means things don't always line up like they should, or don't stay lined up even if they do at first. Parts aren't consistent from piece to piece. Poor finishes that don't last. Poor quality plastics that warp or melt or become brittle quickly. They don't hold their value. Also, how about the fact that American companies put time and money into designing these things that now some Chinese company just comes long and copies? I could go on... No more cheap Chinese junk for me. |

I picked this one up from firetac sports on sale for $32 a couple of months ago. It has worked out good so far and seems pretty sturdy, Ive been happy with it. Edit: I did have to contact the company to get a replacement barrel nut, the first one wouldnt thread on 2 different receivers. They did get a new one out within 2 days and that one worked perfect. I also picked up a 7'' rail just like this one for $25, it has also been solid. http://<a href=http://i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah203/kwooten31/NSR%20Handguard_zps7f92ehgs.jpg</a>" /> Sure wish I would have found these guys. They sell a 6.7" tube / fold down grip combo for $35 but they're out of stock right now. I bought this on eBay & it has the support / trim ring on the front end that I like. Problem is, I have a 7.5" barrel & there's not enough room for the ring so I'm trying to find an 8.5 - 9" 5.56 barrel. |
