Is it possible to add the ejection port rod and cover after the barrel and handguard have been installed?

You could try putting the rod in from the rear. If there is room for the rod then it should work.
It looks like there may be just enough room. Never tried it though.

Usually not, as most handguards are designed to retain the rod from coming out towards the muzzle.  That little C-clip keeps the rod from coming out towards the stock.  I believe that most barrel nuts will probably interfere with the rod as well.  The SLR handguards and barrel nuts certainly do.

It is possible to do it from the rear, but it's a tight fit and you'll rub a bit under the FA area. Just be careful with your e-clip, they're very easy to lose and very easy to break.

That's what I was thinking but I have never tried it.

Ive done it several times. There has been enough slop to allow the pin to fit at an angle. If you end up having to replace the e clip, buy extras. I have two somewhere in my garage.

Probably, but not easy to do from the back once the barrel is installed, I tried, didn't work out for me and I am still looking for that damn C clip!

I've done it, rubs on the FA but it can be done

It's really easy on non-FA uppers.  The FA does get in the way but it's still possible.

Here's a decent vid on how to do it.

It's a total PITA but it can be done. If you can accomplish replacing the e-clip without cussing up a storm then you're a far better man than me.

Pain in the butt , but yes you can do it.

Put down some tape so you dont scratch up the finish.

The hard part is the spring.

To install the pin/spring/door with the barrel already installed, you start the pin through the back lug, then add the spring.  Make sure you get the spring on right - the short leg should be flat against the upper receiver.  You need to tighten the spring one turn to make the door pop open correctly. To add that extra turn on the spring, only put the pin about 1/4 through the spring, which should let you manipulate the long leg of the spring around the notch in the cover.  Now keep the spring straight and slide the pin through it, and finish by using the door as a handle to guide the pin through the front lug.

Getting the clip installed isn't hard, but it's a little bit tricky.  Use LOTS OF LIGHT, and magnification if you can manage it.  I use a 6" surgical pick-up tool to hold the clip closer to one end than to the middle.  Line the clip up on the groove and hold it in place with the pick-up, and use a needle nose plier (closed) to press it onto the pin.  My first time took about three tries to get the clip to go all the way on.

The clip is a standard C-clip, but you can also use E-clips, which go on easier (and stay on just as well).

I gave in and just pulled the barrel nut off again because it was the path of least resistance...

This was what I grabbed, super easy to install but doesn't open all the way, just kind of flops half way open. Thinking I got a dud though because I can't find any info on this issue and reviews all seem positive.

Just did it last night. I just put some tape over the forward assist, found just the right angle and slid it in nice and easy
