I am putting a Spike's Crusader lower build together and its assembled except for the received extension and buffer etc. I am considering the Spike's kit once its back in stock but I have a question. This kit contains their heavier ST-2 buffer. Is there any real need for that?

Joe Bobs has a reasonably priced kit on their website for $40. Has anyone tried that?

Thanks for looking

The spikes is my go to, but idk that it's necessary. Their tube and spring are nice however so I use those. I think the cheaper tubes sound weird when pulling handle back but ymmv.

The Spikes ST-T2 buffer tube kit is the best RE kit on the market (Excluding the super high dollar options like PWS, etc.). I love it b/c it is quiet.

The a5 is demonstrably superior.  Plus powder buffers are considered a gimmick by many.

Mil-spec buffers make noise when you shake the gun. Spikes do not. The powder does not fall out and they work as described. I can only speak for these facts. Gimmick or no gimmick, if I were in a situation where stealth was of utmost importance, I'd be in a more advantageous position running a ST-T2.

My t2 is noticeably smoother in a midlength carbine than the standard carbine buffer.

Gimmick would imply it doesn't work.  I can say that it made a big difference in recoil impulse.
