I just received a 16" midlength upper from BCM, and am trying to get my lower sorted out. The upper is of course already complete, but I'm trying to decide between a complete lower and a stripped build with parts kits, etc.

Anyway, the big issue is the price. For some reason, unbeknownst to me, it seems that buying the parts separate and doing it yourself somehow costs MORE?!?!? I was looking at an Aero Precision std lower and some parts kits, as well as stock kit. The Aero complete lower costs 205.99 + shipping + FFL xfer + bckgr check, bringing it to about 240 maybe.

Buying an Aero or Spikes stripped lower and tossing on a CMMG or Aero parts kit, as well as a pretty cheap Magpul CTR stock kit, and I'm somehow in the $300+ territory. WTF am I missing here? This is kinda frustrating, and I'm looking for suggestions on what I'm doing wrong. DIY should not be more expensive.

Thoughts? I was trying to work on a sub-$300 budget, and the Aero complete lower fit the bill perfectly, with $65 to spare for mags and ammo.

buy enough parts to do 20,000 rifles.
you might get a discount for bulk purchase.
or be willing to shop for days on end, looking for sales and getting on notification lists etc

the real benefit of diy is getting exactly the parts you want and having the experience of actually putting the pieces together.

Yeah I understand that, but when the parts I'm looking at are by no means better than the completed one, and often are the exact same parts in those completed lowers (aero parts kit on an aero lower???), I start to wonder WTF is up. I'm paying less for someone to work more at assembling it? Seems bassackwards.

You could just get a complete PSA lower for $159 PSA Lower and a CTR for $48 here: CTR Stock

there will be certain circumstances where building yourself costs more. If you're building on a budget things will be equal to or slightly more than expected. you're riding a fine line here...if your building with specifics such as upgraded FCG, hand guard, etc, it might be better to build yourself.
