I recently finished my first 80% lower.  I already have a 223 and a 5.56.  Any suggestions for a different caliber for the upper?  I have been looking around and I like the 6.5 grendel and the 450 bushmaster.  I also was thing about a 22lr.   I don't want to get to exotic.  I want something that the parts are fairly easy to find and not too expensive.

.300BLK all the way. Uses same BCG, mags and everything else as .223/5.56. Requires barrel change only.

OP never said what role this one is going to have.

Range plinking?  Not 300blk.  Ammo is not everywhere yet and it's more expensive than 5.56.

But if this might be a basis for a suppressed defensive sbr, yup 300blk is the only way to go.  When Iowa statehouse rats finally get around to doing what we elected them to do and they get rid of the (un Constitutional) restrictions on suppressors, sbr, and full auto, I will end up with two suppressed 300blk.  One sbr and one carbine.

The OP could go with a 9mm rifle. Parts are out there and ammo is cheaper then rifle calibers.

If he is considering 6.5 grendel and 450 bushmaster then ammo price must not be an issue. Both of them are more expensive and harder to find than 300BLK
Not only is the ammo itself cheaper, building it would be as well.

He's currently shooting .223/5.56 so brass would be on hand should he choose to load his own 300BLK. 6.5grendel and 450 bushy would require starting from scratch.

If you reload then the 6X45 is a very easy rifle to build and shoot.  Your brass needs to be resized just a tad and there are a great selection of 6MM/243 bullets.  If you don't reload then the 300blk or conversion kit and shoot 22lr out of what you have already.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I will look into the 300BLK.  I do reload so I'm not too concerned about ammo.  Once I get enough brass, I will be OK with ammo.  What is a 6x45?  Other than the barrel, what parts are different from a standard 223?  I mainly will use this for hunting and plinking/target.  I don't plan on getting into suppressors unless they get rid of the licensing.

It is a slightly necked up 223/556 cartridge with a 6mm (243) bullet.  The only thing you need to change is the barrel.  Everything else is the same.  I am shooting 100g bullets and it has been very accurate with almost any powder I have decided to try. Little to no trimming of brass (it has been less then that of 223 I load)and very very little working of the case.   In fact it has been the easiest caliber to load that was not mainstream.
