I am planning a .300 blk build.I have built two lowers but would like to build an upper from scratch. I have changed out rails and installed FF rails before so I am familiar with barrel nut assembly and all. I am confident that I can build out a stripped upper but am curious as to headspace. I have read that some experience improper head space. How is it avoided? And can it be corrected? Thanks.

Nickel plated BCG can cause head space issues. So can out of spec barrels. Try to get the barrel and non nickel bcg from the same manufacturer. And get a set of headspace gauges.

the head space is set by the barrel extension an you can not  change that.

If that and the bolt are in spec, the head space is GTG

Yeah, the only things that matter in an AR15 are the bolt and the barrel/barrel extension.
