Hiya Everyone, I have a few dumb questions. What size roll pin punches to do I need for the trigger guard and the bolt catch?
What brand of roll pin punches are quality punches that won't require me selling my arm or leg? Granted this will be the only time I will probably ever use or need them so I hate to buy a whole set. What brand of punches do you suggest? What are your opinions please? I have read some horror stories on some of the punches that I found in Google. lol Is the Craftsman's set pretty good? Thank you all for putting up with me and for all the help you all have given me in the past. Take care & have a great night, Mark |

A set of roll pin starters is also listed there and you wont regret buying a set of those. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_8?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=roll+pin+punch+set&sprefix=roll+pin%2Caps%2C236 |

Put my only lower together with these, cheap and easy.

Old drill bits. First, read the sticky on assembly, you can use vice grips with taped jaws. Second - avoid split roll pins, the spiral wound type are much easier to install. And last, you can tap that pin the last smidge with an old drill bit the right size.
Buy a set of special roll pin punches for one build? I've done two and would rather keep using old drill bits so that the other money shows up on the gun, not my tool box rusting away. I've already got old drill bits sitting in it.. |

Thanks for the replies!! I will check them out. Is there any place that just sells the 2 sizes I need or are they the same size roll pin punches needed? Damn, I don't know if that sentence makes sense or not. lol Thanks again. Just google the sizes you want....don't see the problem. Look at the link posted by splunkinoob. All different sizes. I would just get a set from amazon. |

Damn, I am Blind & Brain Dead!!!!! :) Sorry, I totally missed the sizes. Thanks Splunkinoob & Everyone else. I don't know what I would do without you all. I bought just the two from the link I posted, it might be cheaper to buy a set with shipping. I threw them in on another order I placed that qualified for free shipping. There are couple reviews from guys that bent them, if you're hitting them hard enough to bend them on an AR lower, you're doing something wrong. Just make sure to support the trigger guard ears and install them carefully, they do break off on occasion. |

Years ago I purchased these roll pin punches and roll pin holders, these have proved themselves worth the money many times over. http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/general-gunsmith-tools/punches/brownells-roll-pin-punches-prod26482.aspx http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/general-gunsmith-tools/punches/roll-pin-holders-prod781.aspx And for the bolt catch pin there is a specialized tool if you feel the need for it. http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/rifle-tools/bolt-tools/dissassembly-tools/bolt-catch-pin-punch-prod26484.aspx |

I have lots of sets from various manufacturers, but this is the one I prefer to use...pins go in perfectly every time, with little effort: punches |

This is what I have used on three builds. They worked out great....no problems of bending of the small ones.
They are long and a useful when you need a pilot to keep two holes lines up so that you can then get the roll pin started. Very useful. http://www.amazon.com/Grip-Roll-Pin-Punch-Pieces/dp/B003L7HOMG/ref=pd_sim_469_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=1KHM2QPBRSB8QZN62PDR |

Thanks so much for the help. I just bought the ones that I need from Amazon. and never use them again. I can use that money for ammo. I am going to buy the Spikes trigger guard and I really hadn't decided on the brand of bolt catch or on the option yet. Take care & have a great night/day, Mark |
| A little late, sorry. Brownells has a sale right now. If you type in Grace roll pin, the first page will have a link for individual roll pin punches and roll pin holders. The Grace roll pin punches are $4.50 each and the roll pin holders are $5.50 each. You could buy just the punches for $9 plus shipping or the punches and holders for $20 plus shipping. The holders are nice to have, especially for the bolt catch pin. |

I went through a bunch of cheap crap before I bought a good set of Starrett punches. Learn from my mistakes. Over kill for one time use. Building ARs is addictive enough that "one time use" isn't really applicable here. |

Right...not to mention that after handing over a bit of money to a less than scrupulous LGS to assemble a AR 15 from my parts, I swore that I was going to do another build just so I could do it myself. The tools can add up depending on the quality you go with but I am building this myself almost out of spite, I really didn't care about the fact that I may never use the tools again. Living in CT.,... acquiring legal lowers is difficult at best and not cheap. |
