Are full-auto BCGs compatible with semi-auto builds? Do they have any advantages or disadvantages vs. a semi BCG?

Completely compatible and the way they were originally designed.

Everyone pretty much runs full auto carriers.

you are not going to notice any difference on a semi auto gun.

there is an extra cut in the semi auto only.
when the bcg is fully inserted, the back of it is even with the upper on the inside.
a full auto one has more material there and it is visible with the bolt closed.

Mostly they are compatible.  If you have an old Colt with a sear block, you may not be able to use a FA carrier without modification.  If you're starting from scratch, FA is the way to go in my opinion.  No real advantage/disadvantage with either for a semi only gun.

This is the only really possible "incompatible" situation.

This is what a sear block looks like:

If you don't have that, you can run any carrier you want to in your gun.

There are people who say that a FA carrier's "extra mass" helps smooth out a gun's cycling.  The difference in mass is really only a few grams, so that's really not quite accurate.  The AR was designed to use a FA carrier.  While the underside of the rear of the carrier is what trips the auto sear in a select-fire rifle, there's no other "full auto" implication for the carrier.  What's more important is that every FA carrier I've ever seen or heard about fully shrouds the firing pin.  This prevents issues with catching hammers between the exposed firing pin head and the bottom of an unshrouded carrier, and makes the carrier more compatible with a variety of different hammers.

Thanks, guys. I figured as much, but it seems that some vendors trump the FA BCG like it's the greatest thing since sliced soup, and a few even seem to think it's worth extra money vs. a SA BCG.

Personally I like the semi bolt because it is slightly easier to clean. My favorite semi bolts are in this order:

1) JP FMOS (super slick bolt that is kind of like moving butter through your upper plus the easiest thing I ever cleaned). Probably the best BCG I have ever owned and used. I just can't get over how smooth this thing is.
2) SEI chrome (for retro builds and really easy to clean).
3) Bushmaster bcg

My favorite full auto bolts are in this order:

1) Colt

Reality probably won't matter what you get honestly.
