So I'm going to be doing my first build soon.... So far this is what I'm thinking...any thoughts?
AR-15 Build

Aero or Anderson lower $50-$80
Lower parts kit $50-60
Hardened Arms complete upper and barrel $349
Magpul Stock $60
Stock Assembly $40
Troy forend grip $67
Vortex Strikefire II $179

The only thing I would suggest is to save your $179 and go fishing in EE for a better optic if you can wait a few months to swing it. $300ish gets you into eotech/aimpoint pro stuff.

$500 PSA CHF kit (everything minus the lower receiver)

Buy a Anderson lower or a PSA blem lower when they go on sale and you'll have a PSA rifle.

Unfortunately I'm trying to keep the optics under $200. For this build anyways, I have seen the EOTech and like them a lot

The alternative is you make the vortex work until you get tired with it, lose $30-50 selling it, then buy the eotech/aimpoint anyway.

I think you would be better off sticking with irons and buying ammo first, then just save up for an optic. I like vortex glass, but in the end, if you want to depend on that rifle, it's your ass.

You're assuming 'buy once, cry once' even applies here.

Many people don't view these weapons as a must-have weapon that has to be reliable, etc. Most view them as toys, not tools. So something that LOOKS like a quality optic may meet the need and intent.

That said, I'll usualoly say 'buy once, cry once.' Unlike all the cheaper products I've bought, that method doesn't let me down.
