If I purchase a 16" barrel, do I still need to pin the compensator?

Not in a free state. I'm not positive on laws in your state but I'm pretty sure your good to go but I'd suggest asking in the hometown forum to make sure from people in your state that are more up to speed with your states law.

Federal law (which is bullshit IMO) states that NFA weapons qualifies as a rifle with a barrel with a total length of less 16" total. Most of your 16" upper assemblies measure 17" with muzzle device. If you have a 14.5" or 14.7" barrel and you pin and weld the muzzle device then it becomes part of the barrel, and is no longer a NFA item.

The couple years I lived in NJ I had to pin and weld regardless of barrel length. I think in your state, you're fine with 16" but you should make sure.

16” is the minimum required by federal law.
However you must also be in compliance with local and state laws.
