I ordered a YHM free float tube today that I plan on using on my fathers upper that he wants to change up. Will a standard barrel nut wrench like THIS work, or am I going to have to buy the YHM TOOL. I figure I'm going to have to buy the wrench. But I figured I'd ask on the off chance it will all work out.

| If the tube has a jam nut in the rear, you will need the YHM tool or something similar. If not and just a nut with the holes for the gas tube, the PRI wrench should be good to go. I use the standard armorers tool when installing 90% of the barrel nuts out there. Then I switch over to my YHM tool for the jam nuts that are like YHM or the older MI rails. Some budget rails like what MAS Defense sells that mimic the older YMH/MI design work the same way. |

Hi,
If you have the model number of the YHM rail, we could see exactly which wrench you may need. I have / use the YHM wrench you show in your link. I think I got mine on eBay. The jam nut for the rail if it uses one will go on the outside of the tube specific barrel nut after the barrel is installed. Then the free float tube is screwed on to the exterior of the barrel nut as well until it is set so the upper opens and closes nicely on the lower, and where the top rail is level with the receiver. Then the jam nut is tightened up against the tube to keep it from turning. I use a little locktite on the barrel nut exterior where the jam nut and the tube threads will end up. |
| It's been a while since I added or removed YHM handguards but for each one I used a standard armors wrench. If I remember too, YHM has you run the nut down hand tight, then you use the wrench to tighten the nut to the next hole allowing the gas tube to pass through. You don't need to crank on the nut real hard. |
It's been a very long time since I've messed with anything YHM. I decided for what my dad wanted it would be the cheapest / quailty part I could get. The 15% off code for PA kinda helped that decision
The part number is YHM-9810-A HERE is the link to the tube itself. |

Hi,
Here is a link to the factory installation instructions. YHM 9810A Installation instructions I haven't installed that model tube. It looks like there is no jam nut required for the tube, it may be a slightly tapered thread. I think you will need the YHM type wrench. If you have a standartd mil spec wrench I might wait to see if it fits, but I don't think it will. Good luck. -W ETA: It does say in the instructions to use the YHM 9621 wrench. |
| Thanks for the input, I do have the above wrench listed in OP. I looked over the instructions after the jam nut was brought into question and realized it does not have one. It's been probably 3 years since I've messed with anything YH. I'll probably just hang out and see if the standard wrench will work. I'm in no real hurry to put it all together. I just thought that an ARF member might have a solid idea if this would work or not. |

A Gem State armorers wrench has you covered on all of it, if you get one of those, it does it all and more. I have used it for every OEM tube I have ever purchased, spikes, midwest, seekins, yhm, and milspec stuff also. Currently OOS but here Buy once, cry once, work on everything! |
| +1 on Gem State Armory. As well as all AR15 nuts it also does the same for AR10 style barrel nuts. Just but the standard Armored wrench and have them send you the AR10 adapter plates. You will never break this wrench! Made in USA too. They go in and out of stock pretty fast. They are like $45. I gave my father in law one for Father's Day and he pitched the myriad of barrel wrenches after the 1st use of his new Gem State wrench |

Wish I got one of these when I was new to ARs Instead I was gullible and paid $35 for a crappy Wheeler at a LGS. |
