Hi all, I'm new to the world of ARs and have more than a few questions. I've mostly been involved in Shotgunning and the wonderfull world of 1911s. I'm about to jump into the AR arena and need some guidance. I've built some 1911s, worked on my shottys but haven't messed with the AR platform. I've been looking at 80% lowers and some rifle kits, but I just don't know which one would be a good place to start. For my first build I don't want to try to put together a match grade rifle, just somthing to get my feet wet. I've been looking at Daytona Tactical, Palmetto, and some others. I just don't know enough to make a good decision. Any and all comments and direction will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Since you have built 1911's you will find finishing an 80% is easier than properly fitting a new thumb safety or barrel bushing on a 1911.  Look for a 7076 forged lower and jig research hole sizes and depths and go from there.

As for the rest figure out your budget and what you want the rifle to look like finished.  Not knowing if you want it to look like a Vietnam era m16 with 20" pencil barrel with fixed carry handle or a modern m4 or a Modern sporting rifle styled for gun games makes it hard to suggest parts.

The shill is strong in thread!!!!

I wouldn't buy a damn thing from Daytona Tactical cause they shill this place just like Anderson used to.  First post and all.  That is 3 first post threads this week about Daytona Tactical.  I do not trust companies that use this form of marketing.  I encourage others to be very thoughtful with who they do business with.  Whether it be an 'older' shill like Anderson or a newer version like this.

Lug1  I can state in all honesty that I don't work for or have anything to do with any of the companies that I mentioned. I Googled the parts that I am intersted in those were just two of the many companies that came up. I joined this forum to gain some knowledge and hopefully some help in my endeaver. I don't know if this ''Shilling'' is a big problem on this site, but I find it unfair to jump someone with questions just because it's his first post. And no, my feelings are not hurt, I was just looking for some guidance. If anyone has suggestions on my particular build I would be gratefull. Thanks again.

OK dude, look at the thread linked.  Another one very similar was deleted by a mod just a couple days ago.  So if you are interested in Daytona I would take that into serious account.  A start up company that wants to create users, on a forum where advertising is a paid commodity, to skate the system to get free advertising.  Your money your choice.  I just found it odd that there was another 1st post 'what about daytona'.  Good luck and like I said I would not buy from them.  You would do way better to stick with known companies that have know customer service.  The mods have a way with figuring out who shills and who doesn't.  My apologies if I figured you wrong.

PSA is a known commodity around here.  I have only purchased a couple things from them.  I got a buddy that uses them regular.  Their shipping can be a little slow at times, but I personally have never seen a bad quality item from them.  There have been a couple threads around here about a few bad quality items but it seems they got that ironed out if you stick with their premium products.

Lug1,- No apologies needed. I know what it is like for someone to try to get a free ride. I've been in construction since the late 70s, and had many try to take credit for my work. Enough about that. I've looked into PSA and they seem to have decent prices. Again, knowing that I don't know, what options, type of barrel etc. would be good for punching paper and putting a dent in the ground squrrel population around here? I'm thinking about starting off with sights and adding optics later. I'm not out to impress anyone with this build, I just want to end up with a decent rifle.

Are your considering an 18 or 20 inch barrel?   Just curious there are plenty of accurate 16's out there too.  Any idea what you want to spend on a barrel?

I've put together a few PSA kits, and they all turned out great.

Skip the whole 80% lower thing, it's a pain in the butt.

If I did another kit gun id look at Del-Ton
I did a PSA but their lack of communication and general non interest in customer service turned me off
With PSA you’re stuck with what’s in the kit
With Del-Ton it looks like you can pick some stuff you want … leading to not having a pile of PSA parts you never wanted.

I for one have never purchased  a rifle kit. That being said I have used Del-Ton barrels on all 6 of my builds. The barrels  IMHO  are great. I have used 16" carbine and mid-length as well as a 20" rifle length gas.  All are very accurate. Are they a match barrel,  no. I can put 10 rounds in a 2" circle at 100 yards. My wife hits clay pigeons all day long at 200 yards with iron sights.

90% of all parts come from PSA. I got my 1st  barrel from del-ton and with their quality, customer service  and ability to choose options in their barrel  kits I have remained loyal.

Great forum. Can I get in on the IPO shares for cheap if I play nice?
