I was browsing the manufacturers listed in the OP, and I noticed something unusual: http://moriartiarmaments.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=71_79&product_id=341 Not only does this 80%er have the trigger pocket milled out instead of the magwell, but it also seems to be milled out for machine gun parts (i.e. extended rear pocket, auto sear pin holes). What's up with that? THAT is a M-16 receiver, PERIOD! Looks more like a single-shot receiver to me. (I'm not ordering one 'til NOLO wins, though.)
The older style 80% w/ a solid magwell sure would make things easier if one had an ARES belt fed upper or a .50" BMG upper. Tap the buffer tube boss and you're in business. |

Does anybody know of a forged lower with a flared magwell, and maybe a little extra material on the sides for customization? You could order two of these, and have all the extra material you wanted... http://www.theflatspot.net/ar-15-receiver-flat.html Mine was fun to build. A different kind of fabrication challenge...... |

Had to modify two of the plates slightly to make the mag catch work properly and to improve the magazine fit. No big deal though. |

Russ4777, do you or anyone else for that matter have the details on the parts needing modifications? I want to tig one, it should come out pretty clean, I'd like the milling to be clean too.
I've seen mention of it, but haven't seen the exact specs anywhere yet. This is as good of a place as any. TIA |

I've seen mention of it, but haven't seen the exact specs anywhere yet. This is as good of a place as any. TIA As you can see, Russ milled the inside of the magwell for the magazine latch bump on the magazine. He also milled a bit out of the action sideplate so the magazine latch can sit deeper in the well. Give me a few, let me see if I can come up w/ the two threads from last year or so. http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_4/647105_Steel_AR_flats_from_the_Flat_Spot.html http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_4/648352_I_welded_together_a_steel_receiver_from_theflatspot_net__Update_6_11_Paint_Job_on_page_3.html IIRC, there also needs to be some extra material welded in for the safety detent hole, and some folks welded in some extra material in the back on either side of the upper's rear takedown lug. ETA: I've been meaning to ask you, Russ, did you have to use a spacer in the bottom of your buffer tube, since it doesn't screw into the receiver all the way? Nvm, it wasn't you. You used a proper tap. |

You used a proper tap. The mods I made to the side plates are clearly depicted in the photos above and described by BackBencher. I don't have the dimensions. They are self-evident as you tack weld the thing together and start trial fitting the lower parts. I did add some extra small plates where the rear takedown lug enters the lower. The opening was WAY too wide and yes I had to add some additional material to accommodate the safety detent hole. I tapped the receiver extension boss all the way through. A standard tube fits perfectly. This picture shows the interior mods/added pieces. I just noticed in this picture that I had to machine a small amount from the floor of the rear portion of the fire control pocket to give the trigger more reset travel. |

Yeah, it is the camera or flash. The right side and left side pictures the color looks completely different. One side looks bronze and very shiny like the previous pics, the other side you can tell it is green. Matching some of these colors can be very difficult as there is no universally accepted hard and fast standards as to what OD or FDE or any of those colors are. Different part makers produce different shades even when they use the same names and some things can vary from lot to lot or even part to part.

In machining out an "80% Lower" the rear lug is one of the more critical fitting dimensions. why risk it when you can buy one already cut. I couldn't agree more. That is the one thing I look for when purchasing a lower. I messed up a couple of lowers from TR-Enabling when I first started the 80% game. I machined out the rear lug area too wide and any side to side movement locked up the BCG rearward travel. I ended up filling them back in with aluminum epoxy and re-machining them out. They look like shit but it fixed the side to side movement. I recently purchased an 80% lower from Fedarm and the rear lug area was out of spec and did not allow the upper to close on the lower at all. The area that would have been left between the trigger pocket and rear lug was hitting the rear lug of the upper. I had to disassemble the lower and machine out that area. Not a big deal but frustrating. Mora of the story, make sure the lower is in spec. |
I saw some girl texting and driving the other day and it really pissed me off, so I rolled down my window and threw my beer at her!

I saw that thread. That got me wondering about the JB Weld. I saw some promotional videos on it and they stated as long as the metal had a sufficient roughness it would flow into all the pores and scratches and create a permanent bond. |

Down the road I'd like to braze an AR .308" one. I'd like to repeat Randall Rausch's experiment of putting an Armalite upper on a DPMS lower. |

Found these a year ago or so. Bolt catch pin is a threaded hex head so no dealing with that damn catch pin or having to tape up the lower to install, takes two seconds with this lower. http://www.forgesurvivalsupply.com/store/p/496-Forge-Armoury-80-Lower-Receiver.aspx
