What is the best gas port size to use on an intermediate length gas system?

- I have several buffer weights and bolt carrier weights to play with.
-.077 only cycles brass ammo when using a lightweight bolt carrier. with a stock buffer
- I'm also looking for a list of common port sizes for different gas/barrel lengths.

My Del-ton has a .070" gas port and I can run an H2 running full loads (5.56 or .223 I've used, Federal and PMC Bronze). If I shot Wolf or other lower power ammo I'd still feel good about running an H buffer. Carbine gas system with M16 BCG. I'd say run an H buffer with a mid-length gas system if your going to shoot good, full load ammo or a standard carbine buffer if it'll get some Wolf type ammo through it.

My favorite rifle right now is a midlength running an H Buffer and superlight bcg and my SBR is running 11.5" barrel with an H2 buffer and heavy bolt carrier. They both run great. It's a new build that I have that is choosing to be finicky. I don't want to overgas it, but I want to be able to run wolf just the same as some lake city.

I'm tossing around the idea of going with an A2 stock and buffer too... I haven't messed around much with rifle length buffers.

I believe you'd have more problems with a rifle buffer setup. The rifle buffer weighs more. When you say stock buffer, is it un-marked or does if have an H, H2 or H3 stamped on it?

This last range trip I took a unmarked one.

Are you calling mid length as intermediate or do you really mean the real intermediate? A lot of people don't know that intermediate is a real option (popular on 18" barrels)

Actual intermediate.

Lots of info on midlength, not much on its illegitimate child with rifle length.

Got it.  I did a little searching but didn't come up with anything yet.  Last weekend I actually put together my 18" barrel with intermerdiate gas but I didn't and don't have the means to measure the port

Oooh. Why intermediate on a 16"?

That's how the barrel came. I love the build, just can't get it to cycle reliably.

I'd check out the gas system first for leaks or blockages of some sort. There really is no good reason for that setup to not run with a standard bcg, spring and especially a carbine weight buffer regardless of ammo used, IMO. Of course this is assuming it's built with quality parts as I can't think of any bottom feeder brands offering intermediate gas barrels.

All quality parts with the exception of the buffer. I did try it with a quality buffer and experienced identical results.

Hadn't thought to check for blockages or leaks in the gas system except for changing the gas rings on the bolt (done.)

Confirm that your gas block is in the correct location. Simply remove it and see where the carbine buildup is in respect to your barrel port. You could also easy ream it to .080".
