I see some pretty crazy handguards out there, and some crazy pricies.  All I really need a handguard to do is cover the plumbing.  No bipod, no sling, no vertical grip, no flashlight, etc.  I already have a barrel nut.  Is there a simple, but effective, free float handguard that will work with a standard barrel nut and not break the bank?  Light weight is a plus.

you could pick up a simple round tube like the houge or a DPMS, they use a supplied barrel nut, but cost is low.

While they are cheap - having to buy the tools to do it right make it just as expensive/more expensive than one that uses the stock barrel nut.

Cost of barrel wrench and ff tube still comes under just buying a rail that works w/ a std nut.

As dpms and hogue use a std pattern usgi type wrench.

I prefer Rainier's version of the Evolution rail. In your desired length...

Slide it right over the muzzle device of choice and secure.

Windham Weaponry has this one.  It is the same one on their VEX model. It it sold with a barrel nut and will not fit a standard nut.

Without knowing your price range it's hard to say. However, I've had great experiences with Apex handguards.

http://apexhandguard.com/

While MSRP is a bit pricier than the evolution series or the vtacs, they put up some great deals on their clearance section when they have returns or production over-runs. I snagged one of the 14 inchers for $165 (still in stock!). Not as cool as all the 15-18" on a 20" barrel, but it covers the gas block. They do come with QD sockets if you're trying to stay away from that sort of thing. All in all, the quality of machining you get for the price is just awesome. They use a stock barrel nut, and, if you ever want to get fancier later they sell bolt-on picatinny rail sections & a bolt-on bipod mount.

I also have one of their extended mid-length that was on clearance because it was returned and had 'blems'. The finish was scuffed where the previous owner had installed hardware. That scuff is now covered by the new hardware, & is blem-free.

Good people.

How about ALG? Sister company of Geissele, so obviously excellent quality, and at a great pice.

Thanks all.  I believe I've found the one.  But now I have a barrel nut with no home.

What did you end up going with?

I think that barrel nut should turn into another rifle...

I just read up about ALG's EMR Ergonomic Modular Rail.  No rails anywhere on the handguard.  But modular that you can add rails at any position, including the 12 o'clock.  The standard 10" handguard with no rail pieces is $100.

I may pick up 2 since they are lightweight, modular, and inexpensive. Geiselle makes great products and ALG is their sister company so I know they are made well.

Not sure what your consider inexpensive but the AP Customs are very nice, smooth, and exceedingly light as they are carbon fiber.  If at some point down the line you choose to add rails you can, but otherwise it's a smooth cylinder.
