Hey arfcomers I've been searching for awhile now for an upper receiver(no bcg, barrel, ch.) And want to keep it under $150 shipped. It's an all around  rifle going with a 16" carbine barrel, and paired with a psa lower I have already.  Just can't decide. Suggestions? Or are the blem models the way to go. It's probably going to get paint anyways.

I've narrowed it down to:(in order of most likely first)

The BCM upper is a good choice.  Personally, I'd go even less expensive and get one of their "demo" complete (unassembled) uppers for $75.  Assembling a FA and dust cover door onto an upper is pretty darn easy.

I'm not worried about assembling it. Probably get painted anyways. Just an extra $20/$30 for a non blem one was the only reason it didn't make the list. But if I go the blem route I guess it could be extra $ for a better barrel. So many choices

If you are going to paint it, anyway, then you might as well buy a blem.  The paint will mask most simple surface scratches.

Palmetto state armory has blemishes upperso for $39. I buy them all the time. I have never found the blemishes.

Are they as good(quality wise) as the bcm blems. I don't mind paying a little more for the better upper blem model.

I bought a blem from Cope's Distributing ($52 shipped) because 1) I was painting my build and 2) the blems were Cerro forged uppers. Shipping was quick and I honestly couldn't find the blem. Fits nice and tight on my Spike's lower.

I usually get Aero Precision blem 3 packs at ~$50 per upper...

So I ordered the bcm blem upper for this build will probably try the aero one on next build.

                   Now to find a barrel
looking for a 16" carbine, non chrome. Want to get good groups not a match level group is fine I shoot mostly 55 grain ammo.
Looked at: voodoo innovation

Anyone use these before?  seems like a good deal.

So......
A 16" carbine M4 is kinda one of the worst setups you can buy.
M4 is a goofy profile, I prefer either a lightweight, or a lighter medium profile like the Rainer Medcon.

For a 16" I'd recommend a midlenth gas.

I'v had good luck with my DD lightweight midlengths.

I would go with this upper and either this barrel or this barrel so that I could save on the shipping charges.

Really ? I have a 16 carbine now and works great what's wrong with a carbine length can you be more specific why it's bad please.

Thanks I already ordered the bcm upper but I may get one for a spare or a start for the kids build at that price.

There is noting at all wrong with a 16" M4 carbine.  The platform has proven to be very reliable.  A mid-length gas system will be a little more gentle on the moving parts than a carbine.

I have 16" carbines as well, they work.

It is just not as optimal. The carbine gas system was designed for shorter barrels. 16" barrels came about due to the stupid NFA.

only get the 1/9 if you never plan on shooting 75+ grain ammo.

The most will probably be the 5.56 62g.

Carbines just wear out the parts faster?

So 16 mid with 1/9 would be what I'm looking for? for an all around rifle.

And if I want accuracy I should go to a 16 mid heavy barrel instead?

All the years I spent in ordnance and in the armory I've actually learned more here haha.

The carbine gas system is more "abrupt" than a middie is, so you may feel a bit more sharpness in the action as it cycles.  Some people think this affects their accuracy, but I haven't noticed a real difference.

Ok that's what I was thinking just wanted to make sure there wasn't more to the carbine tube that would do more harm then good.

Thanks guys I've got the barrel all set to order when I get some extra cash!

All I have left to my 2nd build is a freefloat and a bcg, ch., buis, fh, and little stuff.
