Do you already have an AR?

Nope. And I'm not necessarily trying to build the highest quality. I'm more or less looking for a certain style and staying relatively cheap. I'm at about $650 with what I've got so far.

You'll need a muzzle decvice. Is the psa kit a moe grip only or a stock too?

I would recommend a Colt 6920 for your first gun but you it seems you want something specific.

Yeah I guess I should've mentioned that the stock and pistol grip comes with the lower build kit. I'm just trying to figure out which muzzle brake to get. I figured I could go as long as I needed without deciding on it since it'll technically shoot without it.

I thought about buying one straight up and looked at a lot of different guns but I really wanted to build one myself so I could learn the ins and outs of the gun. And building it just seemed a lot more fun than just buying one.

Taper pins??  Do you plan on reaming and pinning your gas block?
6/4/2014 7:15:25 PM EDT
[#8]
No, I don't plan on doing that with the gas block. Is that all the taper pins are for?

You don't get to shoot it until it's finished

Haha yeah that's true. Maybe to word it better is I'm waiting for a good deal on a muzzle brake since I'm only gonna be shooting it initially for fun, so it doesn't seem to  serve much purpose right off the bat, although I could be wrong.

I think these are a deal and a half. Compensators. I use these brakes on most of my builds. I'm in California, and that has its own technicalities, and I can use a flash suppressor if I want to, but these have a couple advantages in they can be used here on detachable (high capacity) magazine builds and flash suppressors can't. They are good looking, black nitride coated, they reduce recoil, they have extended for 14.5" barrels that look like A2 suppressors. All around good thing. $25.00? That is a deal and a half. Happy shooting to you and good luck. -W

Does anyone else have any ideas, tips, or criticism for me? Thanks in advance!

You should really buy your first (Colt, Spikes, etc...) to become familiar with the platform and to see what you do and do not like.  For example, why did you choose a Barska rail?

I chose that rail because I like the way it loos and it's cheap. From what I understand (and I could be completely wrong) most free float quad rails are pretty much the same thing. They are generally the same size, weight and material. Also, if I'm familiar enough with the platform in the sense that I've shot them on multiple occasions and understand how they work, won't I learn more about it by just building one myself? I'm more or less playing devils advocate here to try and understand why people encourage me to buy one instead of build it.

No, most handguards are not the same.  Some like the full quads (which they will never use all positions) but purchase them for clone builds, while others know that the only need accessories at specific positions and the remainder is wasted.  You will learn more by deciding what works for YOU...

Yeah that's true. I only want a quad rail because I like the way it looks. I definitely intend on using 2 of the sides but I like the way all 4 looks. I just don't like hand guards because they make a gun look cheap in my opinion. Are any of these parts just not quality? And if I'm pretty set on building vs buying is there anything different I could buy to make it better?

I would get an AIM BCG...

What about it makes it better?
