Good explanation of the differences here-
https://www.bayoutactical.com/blog/difference-between-magpul-pmag-gen-m2-and-pmag-gen-m3

Both Gen 2 & 3 are great mags. I don't seek one out over the other...price generally is the factor that gets me to choose one over the other.

As far as which mags to choose, I go with Magpul Pmags, Lancer L5AWMs and Brownells GI mags. I prefer the first two but keep a decent stash of the aluminum Brownells mags for long term storage...who knows how the polymer mags will hold up 20-30 years from now.

That.

The Brownells USGI's are a great value.

Most recent issue of Guntests agrees that USGI and PMags are tops currently.

Best mag I ever got issued were the first batch of Tan self leveling followers, they were (or at least the endplates were) Brownelles.

Lancer L5 are great mags in addition to those listed.

Nailed it.
I have some Troy battle mags, and they've worked fine. But their range mags that I only bought because I had a 300 blk and wanted to lessen the chance of a guest putting the wrong mag in.

And I bought them before Troy went stupid.

I'm no expert, but mags are mags. usgi get used everyday. I went with pmags gen 2 and 3, gun show price 10 each. Gen 3 have a dust cover.  Have a few metal mags they work fine.

D&H from PSA for $7.99 each with a Magpul follower are on top of my list for USGI type mags. Pmags for polymer style, no preference Gen2 or Gen3 , which evers on sale.

AZarmament has PMAGs for sale at reasonable prices and is GTG. Also a site sponser BTW.  Personally I only use Pmags. You can usually find  the Pmags on sale for under $10. If you do your shopping around. Stay away from Promag, they are junk.
