I'm new to the ar platform and building my first one. I've noticed that some uppers have no forward assist and some do. What is your preference when building your ar, no assist or with assist and why?
Thanks again, you guys are always helpful |

The way I look at it appearance is a personal thing, however....
No Assist = Cleaner Look and outside of combat you will almost never need it if you keep your rifle clean or don't run your AR VERY HARD to the point the bolt and chamber expand to the point of binding. If you are shooting at a range that is pretty much never. In the event bolt does not go into battery you should stop shooting, eject the cartridge and figure out why there was a malfunction (IE: Dirty Bolt/BCG/Chamber, Foreign Obstruction, Mis-feed, Ect.) With Assist = Its there if you need it. In combat if you slowly/quietly chamber a round by holding the charging handle an assist will allow you to insure the rifle is in battery. Also in combat if your firearm jams due to carbon build up or a foreign obstruction (sand, dirt) you can JAM the bolt into battery and attempt to get up and running again before switching to your side arm. I tend to subscribe to the "Better to have it and never need it than need it and not have one" camp. But again this really comes down to the "role" you are building for. If you are making a precision target rifle for recreational shooting you could go without it should you choose. If this is a "SHTF/Zombie Apocalypse" go to battle rifle I prefer the security of having the option. Just my $0.02 |

If you ever plan to load you weapon quietly or will want to safely chamber a round in your home the FA is handy to have.
Slamfires or whatever are a very rare occurrence, but riding the CH and using the FA to be sure the bolt closed avoids the issue. You should not use the FA to force a round into the chamber unless you know for sure the weapon is fouled from not being cleaned and it is life or death. A situation that should not come up in civilian life. Since I practice what I may need to do in the dark my FA gets a workout on a regular basis. |
