Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a good somewhat inexpensive upper with an 18" barrel, I've been having trouble finding one i liked with the 18".  Also would you recommend that i build the upper myself, it seems pretty complicated and i'm not much of a gunsmith at all. Any help is greatly appreciated.

It's actually really simple and it gives you a great understanding of the gun.  There's a lot of videos you can watch.  My first one that i just did, i watched videos step by step on my phone as i assembled the gun.  If you have specific areas of concern, this forum is pretty good with a lot of helpful people on it.

This video is how I learned how to put together an upper from scratch. I used a gas block without the front sight base so you'll have to find a video on that. I have zero experience with building things and I was able to follow this video and put together my upper in very short time. I studied the video until I felt confident I could do it myself.  Also, make sure you have all the tools before you start. You can rent tools like a torque wrench from any auto store. Good luck!

What is your budget? "Somehat inexpensive" means different things to different people.

Although building from parts is a very good experience, I would buy a high quality complete upper for your first AR.

The video posted by Syms is very detailed and shows how all the small parts go together, including the carry handle sight and bolt. Although most won't choose an upper with a carry handle, it is interesting and informative.
