First off, I want to say big thanks to everyone who posts & supports this site. It has been an enormous help & a source of much knowledge / entertainment sense I registered. When I decided to use part of my Christmas bonus to build (put together) (assemble) (whatever you want to call it) an AR from scratch, I came here first. Like others, this is my first AR build, but not my first AR. Like others, I had a specific purpose in mind for this build which happens to be practical shooting competition (tactical carbine & 3-Gun). My original plan was to build the best gun I can with a $1,000.00 budget. Unfortunately, I soon realized that I could not get what I wanted within that budget. That old saying "Buy once, cry once" kept ringing in my ears. As much as I wanted to keep that budget, I knew that I would be looking to replace some parts down the line.
I also wanted to help others out, if I can, by posting some things I found helpful. Namely having a good way to plan & track your build. I looked around & couldn't find a "build sheet" that fit my needs so I made my own & wanted to share it with you. LINK It helped me to figure out where the money was being spent, minimize double ordering parts,  & to keep from having parts fall thru the cracks. I also have the build sheet for this gun that lists all of the parts for this build.  LINK The prices are what I paid & include shipping/taxes.

Here are the highlights:
~ 18" SS polygonal barrel (Blackhole Weaponry)
~ 15" FF KeyMod handguard (SLR Solo 3G)
~ nickel boron BCG (Fail Zero EXO)
~ Lancer L15 lower w/ tactical funnel.
~ Geissele Super Dynamic 3G trigger.
~ Spikes ST-T2 buffer assembly.
~ Magpul ACS-L buttstock.
~ Burris MTAC glass.

Feel free to comment. And now for the pics!

I am copying and saving that pic for future reference. I'm looking into doing a build with the same barrel and rail. Is that an Ergo grip you got on there?

Ya, ERGO DLX Ambi. I switched to more vertical angled grips as they don't cramp my wrist as much. I also like the DLX's palm swell. Its not for everyone, but I like it. The SLR rail is super lite. The H-Bar profile barrel not so much, but I knew that going in & hope it is worth the trade off. I think if I had a second chance, I would see if it is worth getting the barrel already fluted to save a little weight on the front end.

Thanks for the build sheet, exactly what I was looking for.  Can you also describe any specialty tools that you purchased as a first time builder, or that you wish you had purchased?

I like it. I never heard of that receiver so I had to Google it. I like the lines on it, very different. Good job!

A vise & vise blocks were the biggest help. You can get by without them, but having that "third hand" made a big difference for me. I already had a bench vice, but if you don't, a cheap 4" vise will do the trick. I got my receiver vise blocks from Amazon. They were the white poly mag block / alum receiver pin block combo & they worked just fine for me. I was a little worried that the blocks would not offer enough support, but for the minimal amount of torque that you apply, they did the job. I got an AR armorers wrench from AIM. I used it the buffer tube nut & to torque the muzzle brake. It did it's job just fine. I had to get an 1 1/8" crows feet wrench for the SLR barrel nut. I got a a couple cheap sets of short & long punches from Harbor Freight Tools.

Thanks! The selling point for me was the interchangeable mag-well funnels. I picked the medium sized one which is just enough funnel for me.

Nice build, I have the same lower sitting in a box with other parts slowly gathering.  Mines going to be a 7.62x39.  Trying to decide on an upper as I don't like how the lines of a standard upper don't quite match up with the Lancer as they would in a matched set.  I'm leaning towards the Norhtech, as I think it looks pretty close.

Very nice build.  Thanks for sharing.  That lower is seriously sick looking.

Thanks guys. Another thing about that lower is after I put my Surefire 60rd mags in, it made my other 30rd mags look  anorexic. It's like they were made for each other.

Is that a Ranier Arms Ambi charging handle?

How does that Burris scope do in low light conditions?

Yes, it was one of the few parts that I picked where I splurged a little bit. I didn't really need it, but I really wanted it.

So far, I'm satisfied. The Burris was a compromise between the features that I wanted & cost. Playing with the scope in my house, transitioning back & forth from glass to plain eye, the light transmission is pretty good. I personally wouldn't have any issue with using it for some dusk/dawn hunting. I got this scope for competition shooting, so low light isn't much of an issue for me. If I progress in the sport, I might look at upgrading down the line. Why I picked the Burris MTAC is as follows:

~ Daytime illuminated reticle ( I'm an EOTech fanboy for rapid target acquisition ) love the "Donut of Death".
~ Overall quality.
~ Capped turrets (a must have for me).
~ rotary click rheostat (no push buttons & "off" position between each power level).
~ Weight (the MTAC is not the heaviest, but not the lightest either).
~ Glass clarity (not the best, but acceptable for me).

~ last but not least "COST" (dam good glass is expensive!)

I got mine from Rainier Arms LINK but it looks like their price has gone up sense the holiday season. I found another site sponsor (Primary Arms) that seems to have it stock at $209 which is cheaper than what I paid ($217) LINK. FYI, as far as I know every Lancer lower still comes with a free Lancer L5 30rd mag which I have fallen in love with & have gotten more sense.

Thanks, I try to keep things simple in my life but its just so hard for me to say "stop, that's good enough". I tried my best with this build.

I may have missed it somewhere in this thread, but what kind of break is that? It looks gnarly.

I was wandering when someone would comment about that brake (good or bad). I'm not sure if it is super effective at braking, compensating, or hiding flash, but it looks bad ass! I actually got that brake to put on a future fun gun build for friends & family at the range. Here is a link to the CNC Warrior site LINK I went ahead & put it on this gun because the muzzle device I want is not available yet.

Lancer showed a new combo device at the 2014 SHOT show that I really like. Its got adjustable ports with interchangeable jets. LINK

WOW! That's a lot of adjustable ports. Very interesting. I bet you spend a lot of time tuning that sucker.

I'll find out shortly.  From my understanding, the bottom rows are the most important...
