I just finished my first build. Do I need to take it in and have the head spacing checked. I had someone tell me no.

If you used good quality new parts I probably wouldn't and don't with my builds. It doesn't hurt to though.

I would say that it depends on who you got your bolt and barrel from.  If they came from different sources, and/or if one or the other (or both!) were the least expensive you could find, I would HIGHLY recommend you get the combination of bolt and barrel checked.  If they both came from BCM, or Daniel Defense, or other big name, more than likely they'll be safe together.

Brownells has the NO GO gauge you need in stock at this moment, for $22.99.  They are incredibly easy to use, and if you use these, you'll KNOW that a particular combination of bolt and barrel are safe.

So, if I have a brand new Daniel Defense 10.3" barrel, and a brand new Spikes BCG, do you guys think I should check the head space?

Most likely they're fine together.  Where are you in Texas?  There is bound to be a bunch of folks with gauges close enough to check out your barrel and bolt for you.

I am in Katy.  So once I get everything together, I will ask around and see if anyone around me has one I can come by and use to check my setup.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes the person who builds the weapon should check with the caliber appropriate Go and No-go gages.
It is generally better to check before installation as an installed barrel is a used barrel.
I have seen several barrel/bolt combinations fail the Go gage.
I don’t see any manufacturer/supplier as being immune from mistakes or tolerance stacking, especially the ones trying to keep the headspace tight.
If you don’t check the odds are in your favor.
Maybe my luck is less than 50/50, but if I had been spinning the dice I would have lost several times.
