| Hey guys, I'm green when it comes to the AR platform so bear with me. I'm wanting to build rather than buy a complete rifle and have been for a while. I haven't purchased any parts except a couple pmags from my LGS. I've been looking at Del-Ton 16" rifle kits to go onto a Spikes stripped lower. What would be the pros and cons between the M4 and the light weight Mid-Length kits be? I would rather have the 1x7 twist chrome lined barrel over the 1x9. I want the Magpul butt stock and grip, but I want the YHM free float hand guard. Should I stay with the standard F marked sight/gas block and get a rear BUIS or go with the low profile gas block and a reflex sight? My budget is right around $1000. Sorry for sounding like such a noob and any thoughts/input would be helpful. |

Your parts you picked are pretty sound. I prefer mid-length my self I just feel they preform better and have less wear on bolt carriers. As far as you sight thats kind of a personal preference. If your going to run some kind of an optis I would go with the low pro gas block and flip up front and rear sights. Building it yourself will teach you alot about the rifle and will help if you ever need to fix or replace something.
Welcome to the forum and good luck |
| Thanks for the reply. What are your thoughts on the Mueller reflex sight on joeboboutfitters, is it a sturdy optic for the money? I would love an Eotech, but can't see spending an additional $400-500 right off the bat and being in the doghouse with the wifey. I plan on getting the Magpul front and rear Mbus sights as well (probably the gen 2). Just trying to gather as much info as I can before ordering everything. |
| Not to familiar with that sight. Look into primary arms sights. Cheap prices but not cheap built. The MBUIS isnt bad. Just make sure the front sight is on a handguardand not on a railed gas tube as the heat from the gas tube might be a problem. I run Troys myself, ppricey but worth it. And they are coming out with some new aluminum ones this year that msrp for around $150 a set. |
| Ok, so my plan changed a bit on my parts selection. I ended up ordering a Spikes mid-length complete upper, spikes battle trigger, UTG 6pos stock with LPK w/o FCG, Spikes Zombie stripped lower and a Magpul MBUS. I'm sitting right a $800 for all parts. Hopefully everything shows up this weekend so I can start assembling. |

Got all of my ordered parts yesterday. Everything went together great but the hammer. It was tight as all hell. Had to take a small file and remove some of the anodizing to allow the hammer pin to be installed and so it could move freely. Anyone else run into this when assembling their lower? Lemme know what y'all think.

nice. Looks excellent! I am also in the process for my first build. I bought an Aero lower and a Stag Arms LPK from my LGS yesterday. Went well up until installation of the bolt catch whereupon I accidently put a small gouge on the receiver. I hated myself for a good while yesterday. Anyway, I also ordered my bolt carrier group from Bravo Company.
Has anyone ever dealt with bravo company? They were so fast to ship out my BCG as to be ridiculous. About an hour or so after placing the order, I got a tracking number from them. I should be getting it tomorrow, well ahead of the upper assembly which I ordered from Palmetto state. |

My cousin suggested the trigger and I am happy with it, absolutely no creep and a clean break. Plan to upgrade to lighter springs after I put a few hundred rounds through it. Building or buying these things must be contagious, my buddies are all about building one now. |

I've got a bunch of rc cars and I know how those are, they don't stay stock for long.
