Hello All,
I'm starting my first build and need help picking a complete upper. Here's what I'd like... - For home defense as well as accuracy at 100-200 yds. - 16" barrel - Light weight - Price range is $700-900 Any thoughts are appreciated. |

Check out Bravo Company USA. Good quality stuff in your price range.

Lots of folks will say Bravo. Always good reviews. Nothing bad to say about them. But for 700-800, you could build a really nice one and know you got quality everything. Not saying the Bravo one won't be quality (cause it will). Just saying 700-800 can get you way more if built yourself. Or have money left over...
Also, keep in mind.. home defense means a reliable rifle but cheap enough that if you have to use it (and cops take it as evidence), you don't cry about it. For that, even my cheapest PSA builds have been very reliable. And I wouldn't shed a tear if I lost it. I would cry a little more over a Bravo. |

If my family and I survive a home invasion that results in gun fire being exchanged I want my best weapon in hand. If the police take it I would gladly buy another to replace it considering lives cannot be replaced. Coincidentally my primary home defense weapon is using a BCM upper w/eotech and a light. |

IMHO get a cheaper 16" upper and add what you want. You can get a good upper Here starting at $299. These are quality uppers but a basic design. Then add parts as you go. I personally would go with a 1:9 twist but if you plan to shoot heavy bullets for home defense you may want to drop to 1:7. Right now you can build a good basic rifle for under $600. Then spend your extra money on nice optics and ammo. Or a second gun for your back up.
Also if you are not stuck on a 5.56 upper, I would suggest 300 AAC blackout. You get a larger bullet and is perfect for the range you are looking for. Only problem is the ammo costs more. |

I suppose.. But really, I never had a reliability issue (after thousands of rounds) with my PSA, so I would take the risk. A better answer is this:
IMO, there is a difference between home defense and SHTF. If you need an AR for basic home defense, then you probably live in the wrong hood. I have a shotgun and two pistols near my bed for that. For SHTF, I have dozens of AR's and and AK's for that. I hope I never have to use any of the above.. But nothing wrong with being ready. That said, OP wants to spend some money, so fine Bravo.. Being cheap, I would probably take the Eotech off the gun before the police arrive. You know you will have plenty of time to do it. Quoted:

I would keep my same AR as my primary home defense weapon regardless of what hood I lived in. The main thing is that you are confident and comfortable with the weapon you choose. My BCM has about 4000 rounds through it this year including a carbine class with zero issue even when running it hard without cleaning. I'm confident in it and when it comes to protecting my family a few hundred extra dollars spent on a better quality upper is money well spent in my opinion. If I ever actually had to use it in self defense and it was taken as evidence I would buy another one just like it. I also have others to keep on hand until the new one from BCM would show up, which in my experience has been lightening fast shipping to my door in 3 days or less on multiple orders that I have made with them. You get what you pay for...buy once cry once. |
