So, I have a stripped AR15 lower begging to be assembled. I have decided that im going to with a Precision rig for hunting deer and coyotes, and punching paper. I pretty much have the build figured out, i would just like some input as to caliber and barrel recommendations. To give you an idea of my price range, I was thinking about a Ranier Ultramatch or a Wilson Combat, preferably a barrel that can out shoot me I will be hunting coyotes out to 400-450 max and deer 350 max, and may decide to kill paper on occasion at 500. I do have the ability to make my own loads if that is an important factor.

Personally, I would be very, very wary of taking an ethical shot on a deer past 100yards with .223, even if it is a 75/77gr pill. Coyotes I'd feel comfortable reaching out on, sure, but not deer and hogs.

.223 is great for paper punch at your range, no problem there.

The hang up is the ethical shots on deer sized game at that range. For that, I'd step up to a 6.5 or 6.8.

6.5 or 6.8 barrel from Black Hole Weaponry.

While I've killed many deer with the .223, it's not a bad idea to upsize to the 6.5 or 6.8 IMO.

any thoughts on Wilson Combat's 7.62x40WT? I may consider this or the 6.8 and put a comp on it to offset the additional recoil; fast follow up shots are important to me .

I'm a 13'er without a lot of experience, but I'm a hunter and I've been poking around looking at ballistics and accuracy for a hunting build. I considered for quite a while in building a 7.62x39 for deer and hogs, but I also want to reach out to 500yds accurately.

I have been advised and have since been falling in love with the 6.8 round. AR Performance has a barrel that I am sure to buy when it comes time.

Barrel

I'm not entirely versed in what is going on here, but it is my understanding (that could be wrong) that the melonite treated bbls make it possible to use inexpensive metals and still achieve long distance accuracy at a good price point.

Not to mention the reliability I would gain over magazine issues with the x39 round. This could be negligent in your case as I'm not educated on the x40 round.

4150 is not and inexpensive metal for gun barrels.  but it needs to have some kind of protective coating over it to prevent it from rusting, they are just saying that melonite treated barrels offer something that blueing cannot

I'd take a look over at Noveske's shooting team rifle:

Upper Receiver

Model- Gen III precision machined receiver w/extended feed ramps

    featuring anti-rotation interface with handguard

    Finish- Cerakote (Tungsten)

    Charging Handle- Raptor ambidextrous

Low Mass Competition Carrier w/ Enhanced Nitride Bolt

Ive decided on a 6.8 spc build. Where should i go for a barrel that can shoot sub MOA with handloads? also where should i get the bolt from? I prefer everything to be in stock. I noticed brownells has some WOA barrels in stock....... im looking for an 18-20 inch barrel

I shoot deer to 400 yards with 223, it works just fine.  I got 6.5G to buck the wind better and be able to reach out further.

OP I have a barrel from WOA in 223 that shoots 1/2 MOA with handloads.  Stag arms has 6.8 parts.  Call them and see if they have BCG and barrels in stock.

Good choice, but make sure you have brass/dies in hand before you buy a barrel.

Look here:  7.62x40 Thread

I built one when they first came out and it is a really nice cartridge.  Only requires a barrel change like the 300 BLK but gives 200+ FPS more and a bit more range.  Not sure about 400-500 yards though.  I do shoot yotes at that range with my AR-10 however I am not concerned with pelts, just livestock and pets.
