| In yalls opinion is it a better idea to piece together a rifle or buy one off the shelf for the first timer? I like the idea of being able to buy parts piece by piece when I have the extra money, but I have never built a rifle before and dont want to get in over my head. I am not new to rifles or guns, just AR's and I have never built one before. |

Heres what Im thinking at this point for the upper/lower:
PSA complete lower Magpul edition Spikes complete mid-length upper http://i44.tinypic.com/5x8hvc.jpg http://i41.tinypic.com/2a7wlfd.jpg What do yall think? |

Good to go on both options. Buy it and shoot the hell out of it. ETA where in Texas are you. Im in Forney, u? Are those good reliable options? I definitely am doing a budget build for my first time around, but I dont want something that wont be reliable and work for a long time. |

Spike's has a great rep and good cust service. PSA assembled lower should be good to go as well. Just function test it when it comes in and then hit the range....after you buy a mag.. |

So I am good to go with a rear sight or optic and mags correct? Im not missing anything for it to function properly lol. I used to live in Cedar Park outside of Austin about 15 years ago. All you need is a rear sight and optic as well as mags and ammo and you will be good to go. Consider a good weapon light (streamlight or surefire) and a mount for the handguard. IWC makes some mounts for the MOE handguard that are quite nice (low profile solid ergonomics). IMO go with the weapon light, rear sight, mags, and ammo and then start saving up for the optic. You might want to wait since it's this close to Thanksgiving and there are bound to be great deals on Aimpoint PRO from various vendors (Palmetto State as well as AIM and others). |

If you are trying to go in cheap and still have a usable gun for target shooting, then look at this for optics.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008DYHY54/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It is cheap chinease, but I have been using it for quite some time and have no complaints. Of course as money becomes available, I will upgrade to higher quality scope. But this one serves it purpose for now. |
| My second gun purchase was an AR that I built (the first was a pistol). I choose building for a few reasons. The first being that as you said you can buy piece after piece as money presents itself. The second being that I think you have a better appreciation for the gun if you build it yourself. I had zero experience before building it but the internet has a wealth of resources. I also think the in the long run it will be cheaper because you can build it just the way you want compared to customizing and adding parts to an store bought gun. |

Looks like a good option as well. A co-worker bought the same set up and I looked it over and helped him build his lower. Took it to the range and it ran like a top. Lube it up real good and shoot it. By the way, do NOT spend your cash on a cheap optic. That $77 dollars could go toward a $380 Aimpoint PRO and then you would only have $303 to go. Sell plasma or cut yards or just save $15-20 a paycheck and buy a quality optic. |
