I'm putting parts together for a 6.5 grendel upper. As to a muzzle brake they are drilled to match 5.56 and 7.62 but 6.5 don't seem to be available. Is it OK to go with the 7.62 or get a 5.56 and machine it out to 6.5 and a bit of clearance? If I recall, I read somewhere that an extra 40 mils would be a good clearance number. Will the extra room in the 7.62 adversley affect the performance over a proper sized one? Probably not a big deal but I might as well do it right the first time. Your comments will be most appreciated, Tnx

Can't comment on a DIY project, but there seems to be 6.5 brakes in-stock at several dealers.  Try Brownells, Primary Arms, Good Iron, Alexander Arms, Precision Armament, and see if they have what you need if you're so inclinded.

Alexander Arms has a couple of purpose built 6.5 designs. I've got their Millienium Compensator on my 6.5.

I have a JP Bennie Cooley on my Grendel and it is .308 caliber. Still functions like it should. Definitely wear ear pro!

AA and some other barrels use 9/16x24 threads on the muzzle.  Most 5.56 AR barrels have 1/2x28 threads, which are not compatible with Grendels.

Other companies use 5/8x24 threads.

There are muzzle brakes for both available. Here are some sources for muzzle devices for the Grendel:

Black Weapons Armory, Smiths, AAC, Vltor, WCI, YHM, Millenium, Noveske, Gemtech, A2, JP

Primary Weapon Systems FSC Custom is a .30 cal brake and you can chose the threaded insert to fit the thread pattern on your barrel. it works for the 6.5.
