I'm in the process of my first upper build. I have a DD flat top upper, Bushmaster barrel and a Bushmaster A2 sight assembly, and a BCM barrel nut and just regular carbine handguards at this time. I put the upper in my holding block, greased the receiver threads a little, slid in the barrel, slid on delta ring assembly and hand tightened. I set my torque wrench to 30 ft lbs and torqued. I loosened the nut and tightened again, then one more time. At 30 ft lbs the gas tube index was slightly short so I turned up the torque to 36 ft lbs hoping to inch the nut a little at a time until my index was right. when I began to tightened the nut it turn just a hair and then the wrench slipped. I'm using an AIM Sports wrench because of a couple of videos I saw on it and it's a little thicker than most. I had the delta ring assembly fully collasped and was holding back pressure on it when the wrench slipped. I tried again and it slipped again. I loosened the barrel nut and started again from scratch but the same thing happen. I decided to take everything apart before it got to the point that I couldn't get enough bite on the nut to break it loose. After removing and inspecting the delta ring assembly I found the tits all away around the barrel nut were flattend off and a few were broke. I'm just wanting some opinions on where I may have made a mistake and what might have caused this to happen.
Well I got a good wrench and got the barrel installed. Thanks for the replies. |

This review is from: Aim Sports Ar15 Stock Combo New Style Wrench Tool (Sports) Pretty sad, first turn on my barrel nut and the teeth shear. At least they accepted the return, but that means I'm still looking fro a wrench. |

Not all barrel nuts are created equal, and not all wrenches are, either. I'd go with a better wrench. I have the DPMS armorer wrench, and it's pretty good, but I've found that the TAPCO armorer wrench is also (kind of amazingly) pretty darn good. The AIM tool's design is solid (it's been used by many other tool makers already), but I don't think they make it out of quality materials or they don't finish it properly (or both), because there's an awful lot of specific negative press about that particular tool.
Also, even though the TM says "torque to 30 three times," you might need to do it a lot more times than just 3 in order to get the grease fully distributed on the threads of both the upper and the nut. I apply the grease with a short-bristle acid brush to get it in all the grooves to start with, and sometimes it still needs some extra coaxing to get things smoothed out. |
