What is the shortest barrel that will reliably work with a midlength gas system?

IMO 14.5" would be my limit.  MAYBE a 13.7" with a KX3, but I wouldn't do it.

well the shortest rifle im aware of people building is 16.5 inches.  16.5 - 12 = 4.5.  the typical short carbine is a 10.3.  10.3 - 7 = 3.3.  following that same logic and cutting the difference in about half, 9 + 4 = 13.  13 inches would likely function well enough for most people, but under powered ammo or cold weather may (most likely WILL) cause issues though.

I don't know for sure though, this is just drawing conclusions from other known system lengths.  haven't actually seen anyone do something like this.

I guess I answered my own question:

Noveske 13.7" mid length

Those 13.7" barrels haven't been in stock for quite awhile.  You would want to be sure the gas port size is about the same as the Noveske if you want the same performance out of it.  I asked my brother about a set up he had, and his 13.7" was a mid length with a Pinned KX3.  It ran great, but i believe the gas port was opened up some.  He's not sure of the size.
