Ok, I've enjoyed ARs for a number of years now but I'm a noob at AR construction. I want to upgrade to a free float tube/rail (not Troy) but the rails I'm looking at require removal of the barrel nut. Will this somehow allow a change the headspace where I need to check with a go/no-go gauge? Explanation would help my understanding. Thanks!

| nope, as long as the barrel gets torqued back in properly you're fine (frankly it's kind of hard to screw that up). headspace doesn't really change so long as the bolt locks properly into the barrel extension. the ONLY ways to "change or modify" your headspace is to try new bolts or new barrels (extensions maybe im not really positive on that one...but that just isn't done). that's why some retailers, when you buy a barrel or upper from them, allow you to order a bolt 'properly headspaced to the barrel'. |

There are SEVERAL makers that have handguards that use the factory barrel nut, so in reality you don't need to remove it unless you want a particular brand that does require it. Samson EVO Rainier EVO Centurion Fortis are a few.. |
