Prepping for my first build.
I'm getting some 80% lowers soon, and I'll see how well I can finish those. The plan is to have a decently long lasting ARs. Here are the pieces I'm currently eyeing, apart from the furniture. Spikes lower parts kit w/out trigger group Spikes complete bolt carrier group Mega forged upper (maybe vltor mur) Geissele SSA 2 stage trigger What I'm not sure about, is the upper parts. What type of buffer will I need, and what kind of barrel should I go with? Its mainly going to see the range. 5.56 |

barrel selection is something you should really look at if you are going to build it yourself.
Some things to think about. Twist rate. Are you planning on shooting all bulk cheap 55-62 grain ammo? If so you don't need a 1-8 or 1-7 barrel a 1-9 will work for you just fine. If you think you will want to shoot 75-77 type bullets you will want to change that. How accurate do you want it to be? How long do you want it to last? If you are only planning on slow firing a few hundred rounds a year which is pretty standard for most shooters today you will not need to spend too much on your barrel. Things you are looking at...You have heavy profile light/pencil barrels chrome lined or not stainless steel lots of choices. Find the length you want and begin bringing it down. You will need to read a lot don't just ask in the ar section which should I get because really some folks just say x is best and that doesn't help you much. For the most par as far as buffers go you will not need anything special or different. H buffers are the 'standard' now as far as I am concerned for the m4 type rifles. There are many different weights besides that. The h buffers are about 3 3/4 oz. If you were doing something that would have different gassing issues or felt recoil you can get hydraulic cool guy ones counter weight ones and the list goes on. If you find yourself with failures to lock back or feed ect you might have too heavy of a buffer or spring. |

It probably won't see more than a few hundred rounds a year like you say, but I'd like it to be averaging at least 3-4" at 100 yards w/irons(which I realize would not only be up to the gun)
After reading for a while, I've come up with this. 1-8 18" Chrome-moly. The other characteristics of the barrel aren't very important to me. It will be rigid enough at that length, 1-8 will be "the most versatile", and Chrome-moly is supposed to hold it's accuracy longer than stainless. I suppose this is my first build, of 4, so I will go with what I think sounds good. After I that I will know what needs to change. I'll try to organize everything that I've learned about barrels, and post it. Quite interesting and somewhat confusing at times. lol |
