I'm in the planning phase of building a nice hunting rifle chambered in 7.62x39. I have my build pretty well mapped out.
Palmetto upper, LPK and possibly lower. Hogue grip. A2 stock. YHM 20" fluted, chrome lined bbl. M1S free float tube. MGI bolt and firing pin. Spike's M16 BCG. Topped with a Nikon Pro-Staff BDC 3-9x40 I've read a lot about the reliability (or lack thereof) of the Russian round. I know to make sure I've got M4 cuts. I've sourced C Products 10rd mags. And obviously I've got the bolt and firing pin base covered. Being that it will be a hunting gun, I'd like the trigger to break somewhere in the neighborhood of 4#. I haven't yet decided if I'd like to go single stage or 2 stage. With a trigger break so light, should I anticipate light primer strikes becoming an issue? I plan to hunt with brass but maybe do some plinking with surp shit. Options I'm considering prior to your input: National Match 2 stage Reduced power trigger (JP or something) with mil-spec hammer spring Full JP trigger with shaved hammer for less mass Are any of these options ideal, do you have other suggestions or am I just dreaming too big for a crisp, light trigger with the x39 round? |

Mostly because no one really uses 7.62X39 in an AR platform. I wouldn't use it for hunting anyway as its not know for accuracy. 3 moa at 100 yards. That's enough to miss a kill shot.
Anyway, you won't have light primer strikes with a light trigger. The hammer is on its own spring. Trigger pull weigh is just to how much it takes to release the hammer. My mil spec 5.56 trigger breaks at less then 5 pounds. |

That's enough to miss a kill shot. 3-4 MOA is out of an AK47 platform not an AR platform. The round is not inherently inaccurate, it's the platform. I had an AR with a 16" barrel in x39 that routinely shot 1.5-2 MOA. Plenty good enough for the pigs I whacked. |

Quoted:
Save yourself the money I have pretty much the same set up and use a ALG trigger set the ACT AR-15, for $65.00 it breaks at about 4-6 lbs but it is smooth and fast, it is like night and day compared to the mil trigger. Quoted:

I'll look into that! Price point is very seductive for me. Obviously, there are parts in this build I won't be looking for price point, but I feel the trigger is one area I have wiggle room with price/value/quality. Thanks! Quoted:
I would just go with something like .300blk or 6.8. If you did .300blk, you could get a second upper in 5.56 and have a plinking gun since all the parts are the same except the barrel. I did consider .300BKT or 6.8SPC, but ultimately decided to go with the x39 because of it's availability. It would be nice to not have to worry about bolt differences, but I'm not building a swappable upper. I did consider that as an option too, but this will have a different lower than what I currently have on my 5.56. My 5.56 has an M4 style stock and the rifle is primarily all black. The x39 hunter will be liquid dipped in a camo pattern with an A2 stock. I am truly building a dedicated hunter to compliment my plinker. After all, you can't build just one, right? |

Alright, alright. I've started to consider the 6.8SPC.
Ballistic drop is more favorable. Range is more favorable. Load and brand options are more favorable. They're only slightly less weight, still heavier than the .243 I currently use for deer. About the only downfall I can see is they cost more. I can use the excuse that I have 5.56 for cheap plinking, but that really isn't the case. It's just not cost effective to plink with right now. The debate is still on, but 6.8 is on the radar. |
