I'm sorry if this is not the right location for this topic.. I searched all of the forums but I couldn't find a better spot. Maybe a mod can help?
Anyway, I am looking to build a large "gong" like target. Thinking it should be about 30" in diameter and about 3/8" thick. I want to make it out of AR500 steel, but I am not sure where to acquire the raw materials. Does anybody have experience building these? |
| I don't see where he offers a 3/8"x30" gong, but you can probably ask him... Here's TTM's website: http://www.thetargetman.com/product-category/ar500-shooting-targets/ |
| Why 30" diameter? That is one huge target. If you would be okay with a 10 or 12 inch you should check Widener's. wideners |

You will not be able to cut or weld ar500.
30" will be 3MOA @ 1,000 yds. At that distance, you can get away with 1/4" thickness as your rounds will not be hitting very hard. Besides, going with 1/4" will probably save you 50 pounds on weight and cost much less. Go to ebay and search for ar500 target. Some of those guys will cut custom pieces of steel. |

How about a 22" round target? $179 here
Edit. I have ordered from them before, fast shipping and fine product. |

Well, I was planning on shooting around 100-120 yards. The real reason why I want it so big though is so that I'll have an easier target to hit with my handguns at that distance.
The main thing I'll be shooting it with will be my AR, but also a .22 and a .35 Rem lever action. I like that 22" target, I might just go for that if the local metal guy comes back wtih nothing. |

Check your local propane supplier I just got a 125 gallon scrap tank for $60.00. I am going cut off the rounded top and use the bottom as a burn barrel.I don't know yet how thick the tank is, just got it yesterday. I am thinking between1/4 and 3/8. I was thinking of using the top as a shooting gong.
Check your local scrap yards sometimes they have old pressure tanks that make good gongs. My brother got one that was about 1/2' thick the top was about 30" dia..308 just makes a dimple at 300 yds. The only problem you might have (depending where you live) is some scrap yards will not sell to individuals any more( insurance issue) When I lived in NJ I would go down to the yard and ask to look thru the stainless and Aluminum piles, always got a go ahead, paid just little more than scrap price. Several years ago they sold out and the new owner stopped allowing it I now live in WV and have three scrap yards to pick from. |

You will not be able to cut or weld ar500. I cut and weld hardened steels, including AR500 often for my job. Although it is getting very expensive and harder to find on a deadline over the last few years. The last targets I made were from Hardox 400 remnants from a job I did in 1/4" and for 100 yard hits from rifle rounds up to a 45-70 it has been adequate. Working in a welding shop, I can tell you that dump trucks, dirt moving equipment, gravel screeners and other sorts of high wear industrial equipment uses these steels on wear surfaces and someone has to repair them. Find the place that does the repairs and ask about some remnants from their weld shop. |
