6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC or ditch the lower and just build a .308 gun.

First question; do you reload?  If so, definitely go with the 6.5 grendel.  Great cartridge out to 1000 yds, even has more down range energy than the .308 due to better BC.  Go with a high end 20-24" barrel (Kreiger, Shilen, etc...) with a matched bolt. I would also go with a lighter, single stage trigger.  JP makes a good one and it isn't too expensive, crisp at a not TOO light lbs.  Do not go cheap on the optic, you can't hit what you can't see.  I would go with a Nightforce, they are very very tough and track perfectly.  If you don't reload, you need to if you want to 'reach out and touch something' accurately and consistently.

If I were in your shoes, dad, I'd consider both the 5.56 and the 6.5G.  For accuracy at long range, the 5.56 Wylde chamber is close to what the service rifle shooters use at Camp Perry - 600 yards.  The 6.5 G is another, more expensive option with an excellent bullet selection.  You pretty much need to reload for top accuracy, esp with the Grendel.  Both will need longer barrels, 20" or more to get optimum performance.  Expect your rifle to be heavy.  Get a bipod, I like the Caldwell models for about $40.  Get a high power scope, even a Leapers, to wring out your loads or ammo types at 100 yards and beyond.  good luck - CW

Thanx for all the usefull input guys. Ive got some thinking to do and sites to visit. Yes i do reload and have been for about 3 years. Ive decided to go with 6.5 grendel. Any advice or tips on the build. Whats different between the 55.6 build and the 6.5 build? Other than the barrell of course. Thanx.

Barrel, bolt and mag are the differences.

You will use (choose) either a Type I bolt or a Type II bolt.
Of course, these must be headspaced to your barrel, as always.

Type II face is cut .010" deeper which is said to improve extraction.
Type I is same as 7.62 x 39 and easier to find.

AR-P Superbolt may be pick of litter and is Type I.

What is your budget? Get a quality bolt, send it to Kreiger, and have them make you up a barrel.  Everything else is just like any other 5.56 AR except mags...... You will not regret going with the Grendel. It is an exceptional round.  Most of you may not believe me, and I still have a hard time believing that I saw a .5" group shot with a Grendel chambered AR at 500 yards!!

Do you handload?

What realistic ranges are you talking about?

And what are you touching when you reach out and touch?

Well there's a difference if you want to hit a paper target at 1000 yards or if you want to take down an Elk at 1000 yards.

For 1000 I'd give some thought to an AR Performance 6mm BR or BRX, or possibly their forthcoming 270AR.

Maybe 6mm AR or a 6mm SPC, or John Holliger's 6mm RAT.

A 308 size platform would give you a lot easier path to get to 1000 yd performance.  260, 6.5 Creedmore or 6.5x47 are all good 1000 yd cartridges and readily available.
