Well Ive been a long time lurker, but as my build is drawing to a close I figured I should start posting.
Ive been working on this thing since February and Ive finally got enough saved up to pull the trigger on the rest of what I need. Here is what Ive got so far. Palmetto Lower PSA LPK Magpul ASAP MOE + Grip ACS-L stock MS3 Sling Enhanced Trigger Guard http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w277/mmmbuckles/185b9bd5-8ce1-42af-96cd-edcd8e638254_zpsc292b69a.jpg Trying to keep everything FDE right now. As you can tell I still need an upper. Thats what Im on the hunt for now. I am trying to find a complete upper with BCG and charging handle, mainly so I dont have to worry about head spacing and all that jazz. My budget is $600. I dont have a ton to work with, but I should be able to get a half decent upper within my budget. I would like to stick with a carbine length system. Im still new to the whole AR scene so any criticism/recommendations are welcome. Even bad ones lol. |

Here's a whole rifle kit from PSA for $629.
Really nice upper: 1:7 right-hand twist , chrome-lined, bore, mid-length gas port, and M4 feed ramps, high pressure tested, mag particle inspected, and are finished off with a Midwest Industries SS12G2" free-float rail, and an A2 flash hider. Made by FN Manufacturing. You could sale the lower build kit, or keep it for the next one. You know you're already thinking about it. I really liked how this upper turned out on top of a lower set-up very similar to yours. </a>" />

is there any advantage to running a mid length compared to a carbine? It's is subjective, but many agree that the mid lengths runs a bit smoother (slightly less recoil). Not that there is much recoil to begin with. Probably unnoticeable to the average Joe. Other than that, you get a little bit more room on the hand guard for mounting things. I personally like the looks of a mid length better than the carbine. More of the barrel is covered. On the negative, they can be picky with some ammo. I've never experienced it, but have heard that underpowered ammo can cause short stroking. |

As far as recoil, maybe. A little more shit hanging off the gun closer to the muzzle may make some minor difference. I think its mostly personal preference. The new straight arm grips the Tier1® guys use needs a mid or full length rail or handguard. I built a carbine a few years ago and all of a sudden there was seemingly a switch to long rails. If there is an accuracy shift it's because the railed guns are normally freefloat VS a mounted handguard, I shoot so shitty I'd never know the difference |

On a mid length, the gas port is located closer to the end of the barrel. Therefore, there is less time for the gasses to cycle the action before the bullet leaves the barrel.
I run a 14.5" BCM upper with a middy gas system. One of the disclaimers when I bought it was to use quality ammo to prevent short stroking. Like I said, I have never encountered any problems, and I have used a variety of ammo. It basically just boils down to what you want your gun to look like. The differences are minor unless you have specific plans for rails/mounting/ and styles of grip. Nice looking lower BTW |

I read an article somewhere on this. From what I remember, the carbine gas was to "harsh" on the action. The manufactures fixed this by creating the mid length system. It can't be to serious an issue as millitay and law enforcement use it still. So your back to personal preference.
If you have longer arms you might want to use mid. That let's to get your arm up farther to help recoil management, not that there is a ton. Your sight will be farther apart and will improve accuracy. If not go for the carbine. There is no wrong choice here. |

However, this can be fixed pretty easily by adding a heavier buffer. +1 on the midlength having a longer sight radius. |

Well I ended up ordering a Stag upper from Rainier last night. Not sure what their shipping is normally like, but I'm hoping I'll get it sometime next week. Pics to come once its assembled. I'll still need to get a rail. My last 2 Rainier orders have shipped within 3 days. |

Still waiting on a shipping notice from Rainier, but in the mean time I managed to pick up a free float rail, low pro gas block and a new range bag.
Im either going to have to find a barrel wrench or someone with one so that I can install my rail when the upper comes. Ive taken taken an upper apart, but it doesnt look too difficult. Next on the list is some MBUS sights, XT rail covers, and a flashlight mount. |

Upper came in today. It was on as soon as I came through the door after work.

Installed the rail, gas block, afg, rear sight and rail guards. http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w277/mmmbuckles/D5CA6E69-99CC-4169-8683-3181F48153CA-1817-000001054758215A_zps39140960.jpg |

Took her to the range today to get it sighted it. Only took about 5 shots to get it zero'd. I ran some old Lake City 5.56 from 1977 and some monarch steel through it without a single problem.
Now on to upgrading it. My list of upgrades: Weapon Light BCM Charging Handle Red Dot Grip Pod Carry bag |
