So I'm looking into getting or building a really nice ar-15, theres a guy I know who wouldn't mind parting with his, here are the specs:
Custom AR 15. Rifle length Adams Arms piston system. Approx 100 rounds through the rifle. American Trigger Gold two stage, 3 pound trigger. 1 MOA accurate at 100 yards. Mega Arms Maten upper/lower receiver asssembly. Ambi bolt release and coated in Nickel Boron. Black Hole Weaponry stainless steel 18? polygonal barrel, topped with a Dragons head muzzle brake. Magpul PRS stock Black Rain ordinance tactical latch Ergo grip Comes with one Magpul magazine, new. Grip Pod (the real one, not a cheap knock off). He told me he'd give it to me for 1900$ that seems not too bad of a deal to me, but I kind of want to build something from the ground up. Now exactly what I'd use it for I'm not sure, probably home defense, target shooting, and maybe some small game. What do you all suggest? Like I said, I'm new here and I'm just learning the ropes. |

My two cents... I bought a rifle first... It'a great rifle and I'm glad I have it. But if you want to learn about the platform I'd go with something cheaper. You can get an entire (pretty decent) rifle for less than half of that and then take what you've learned and build a really nice one with the money left over. At that point you'd have two, and a pretty fair amount of knowledge on the platform. I'm in the middle of my first build right now, and it's surprisingly easy. I tweaked the crap out of my first rifle (m&p 15) and got comfortable with it then bought the seekins billet lower and LPK, anti rotation pins, billet mag release, and ambi safety. I have a really nice assembled lower and as soon as they're available again I'll be putting together a matching billet upper.
If you want to learn build one... If you want to build a really nice one. Play with one you don't care about as much first. Worst case you build a really nice one and sell the cheap one for close to what you paid for it after using it to educate yourself on the platform. Then use that money to finish your build or recoup some of the cost (or keep it and have 2 ARs... ).
My .02 Mike |
| My answer is: no. I can't say that it's a bad rifle, but $1,900 is pretty steep. If you shop around, you can piece together an awesome rifle for much less than that. Requires the equipment, tools and a little more patience, but that's the optimal route if it's an option for you... just my two cents. |

You're all over the place with this post. build/buy, small frame/large frame in the first sentence. Spend a lot of time here reading and learning about the platform. Then make an educated decision on what you want to do. Post your PRE-PURCHASE decision here for comments especially if you choose to build. Walk away from that large frame parts gun for right now. |
| Thanks you guys so much for your quick responses! I think I want to go with Mike's route. I want to do something cheap that is decent that will teach me a lot about building these things and whatnot. Do you guys have any advice on where to get parts or a kit for something like this? |
