In the middle of my first build and was just wondering if anyone has any clever solutions for protecting the bolt catch and/or lower receiver from an accidental hammer strike while the upper is unhinged.

I haven’t purchased a BCG yet and can’t resist playing around with my work-in-progress.  Thought maybe there was some way I might keep something wedged in the trigger well that would absorb the blow.

Well I put painters tape on my lowers, and I use the long handle roll pin punch holders to start the pin, then put a small punch in from the backside to keep it lined up and tap it in with a grace roll pin punch.

Someone is going to come in here though and show the picture of a pair of vise grips with green electrical tape on it and you can also do it that way if you prefer the butcher method.

Oops.  Maybe my post was confusing.  I meant the weapon hammer after assembly.

I just flip my vise jaws around so that they are flat, mine like most are somewhat knurled. Then like shooter I tape the lower and get the pin started
with a roll pin stater punch, you could use a needle nose or even regular pliers to hold it there.
Then I use the vise jaws like a press to drive the pin home. Piece of cake!

Well in that case, try stuffing a piece of accuwedge in there. LOL!

The black ones are a bit more plyable it seems.

oh lol.....don't worry about it.....it's just the internals it's not like you are going to break anything unless you want to win the best of show.

Wrap the hammer in elect tape.  Thats the first thing that comes to mind.

I think he means dry firing with the upper off.

OP, just use your thumb to ride the hammer forward. Leave it forward when you're done playing or cock the hammer back and engage the safety.

They make dry fire blocks that drop in.

+1 Pretty cheap and prevents accidentally doing something you don't want to do.

Dry fire the gun before you take it apart.

edit: no bcg. ride the hammer forward and don't dick around with it!

Try keeping the safety on.   There is no need to fire the weapon in this matter unless you're testing the disconnector and hammer catch, or testing trigger weight. When that is done, your thumb can take the force of these specific needs.

Perfect.  I found a few on Midway's site that appear to do the trick.  Thanks!
