I'm planning an AR10 build (and by planning, I mean making a list of parts that I'm still in the process of saving up to actually buy) and I could use a hand. I've put together a couple AR15's but I'm not sure what all the differences are. Obviously the caliber. I'm not a complete idiot, just mostly . But there are things I'm not sure about like:
Does an AR15 pistol grip fit an AR10? Most sites give me the same results whether I filter by AR15 or AR10. A lot of people seem to agree that anything longer than 20" on an AR15 is overkill, but does that apply to the AR10? What are the typical gas system lengths? Specifically on a 24" barrel. I want the shortest handguard that will still cover the gas block. Why are most of the gas blocks I find clamp-on? I have a list of all the parts I think I'll need, but I'm sure nobody wants to read all that. If you know the answers to any of the above questions, or know anything else that a rookie like myself might not think about, I'd really appreciate your input. |

You really need to read the variants FAQ, and then pick which pattern .308 you are going to build.
If you are going after the AR10/Armalite pattern, then follow that list. If you are going after the SR25/DPMS, Etc Pattern, then follow that one. 24" .308 is going to be one heavy mother. Holy shit. My 16" is a beast, and I am always looking for way to lighten it up. In the DPMS pattern rifles, you will find all 3 gas system lengths just as the AR15, but the buffer springs and weights are specific. The pistol grips will fit, but they are different at the tail, and there will be a gap between the back of the receiver and the grip. You can run the AR15 grip, but it looks like shit. Ask me how I know. As for your gas block question; what do you mean: "why are most clamp on?" ? The same gas blocks are used on the ,308s. You can get, or have a pinned gas block on those barrels exactly like the AR15. If you want a handguard to cover the gas block, then follow the same rules for this as you would on the AR15. Carbine, Midlength, and Rifle. Same same. The problem is; there are fewer handguards available, and you have to pay attention to the pattern again. For handguards, there are 4 patterns: DPMS Hi, DPMS Lo, AR10/Armalite, and Rock River Arms/LR8 Confused yet? Have fun |

Thanks. I probably scrolled past that a hundred times and never even noticed it was there.

Boy, this is gonna be tougher than I thought. I didn't realize there were different patterns. Looks like I have a LOT of reading to do.

Have fun I'm hoping that a fluted barrel and lightweight handguard will bring some of that weight down. Either way I don't plan on carrying this thing around much. More of a "sit and wait" gun. With the grip, I'm just hoping I can use a Hogue because that's what I have on all my other guns. It's cheap and I like the way it fits my hand, so it'd just be nice to stick with what I'm used to. But If I have to go with something else to get a proper fit, I'll live. I did see a few of the set screw type gas blocks. It just seems like the vast majority of .308 gas blocks I find are clamp on and I'm wondering if there's a reason for that. As for the handguard, I just want to be sure I don't make the same mistake as I did when I put together a 20" AR15. The rifle length handguard left my amateur fsb-to-low-pro-chop-job sticking out the front, so I ended up losing a little money when I sold that and bought an extended rifle lenth handguard. Well, I guess I'd better reading. Thanks for your help. |
