I have a take off FSB and a new barrel. I am using a C7 style upper and wanted a non F FSB so I purchased an M 16 take off. I am curious about the install, I see on the procees on net of people tapping the four holes on the FSB and using allen head screws to hold the FSB in place. My question is - Does that make the sight base secure enough on a new barrel that has never had an FSB istalled? ie the barrel has no grooves from where it would have been drilled for the tapered pins. On an old barrel that had a sight base previously installed the set srews would index in those exisitng grooves and be more secure. I would think. Will the set srcews just pressing against the barrel be secure enough? I am thinking probably not but am looking for some opinions. Just was curious - otherwise I will send it off to be drilled and pinned.

What do you guys think?

I would send it off to John Thomas or ADCO to have it pinned.  If you want to use the set screw method then it is best to have the four dimples machined into the barrel.

If I am going to send off  I'll go with the pinning route. Do you have contact info for John Thomas?
Thanks

i can personally vouch for John Thomas' work. just had him pin a fsb on one of my builds and it came out great.  cheaper than adco, and John is a great guy to work with.  he had mine done and shipped back to me the day he recieved it in the mail, even though he said his turnaround time can be up to 10 days.  i think same day service is a norm for him.
