So, here I am. I've been shooting forever, but have never owned an AR. I just picked up a stripped lower for $120 from my friend.

http://www.ar15news.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/AR57-Forged-AR-FIFTEEN-Lower-Receiver-3.jpg

My rules are:
1) Stay under $1000
2) No "tacticool" stuff. I don't care about flashlights, lasers, bayonets, etc
3) I'd like to gear it for mid-long range.

I'm on a student budget, so I'll probably have to buy this gun piece by piece, and probably search around for deals. So, first off, I'm going to need a quality lower receiver parts kit. Could someone recommend a cheap but reliable lower parts kit?

If your on a budget I would check out palmetto state armory for parts.  They also make nice uppers for a good price.  Welcome to arfcom

Have you tried lurking in the EE? There's a glut of good stuff in there.

Is this one of their newer lowers?  Many were out of spec.  You may have already read the many threads from last winter about this.

I'm not sure how old it is. Is there any way to visually check whether or not it's built to spec?

Also, I'm not too concerned about it being "mil-spec", as long as it's functional. I don't plan to fight any wars with this one. =P

I am talking about parts that actually fit, not "mil-spec"

Do a search for it.  There is a lot of info on it.  AR57 made good on the ones that were bad, as I recall.

Calipers is the common name if you try to look for them.

You can get very good digital ones, starting at about $49.99 at most hardware stores or you can go all the way up to like $300+
