I plan to build my first AR in the next few months.  I've traditionally been a bolt rifle person and never had much interest in a semi-auto rifle.  I never thought they were very accurate.  None of my friends had one....

I began lurking on this site a few weeks ago.  Very interesting builds and lots of folks willing to pitch in with help!  Just the way I like it!  The number of vendors that support this platform is amazing!

Anyway, I'm planning on building a hunting rifle.  Intended game is deer, predators and some small game typically shot well within 100 yards.  Generally, no brushing-busting with my shots either.

I'd like to build something that is lightweight, compact and accurate.  I've enjoyed the build videos on Youtube, MidwayUSA and others!  With the right tools, the builds seem fairly straight forward.

I'm thinking about the 6x45 for a number of reasons.  It is simply a barrel swap for a standard 5.56, same mags, easy to form brass from .223 and it should have plenty of horsepower on deer at the range I'm shooting from.  I don't need a 600 yard gun...barely a 200 yard gun!

In my state of Virginia, we must use a bullet on deer that is .23 caliber, or larger.  I have shot a good number of deer in other states with the .223.  It has plenty of muscle with a good, solid hit using the right bullets.  I reload my own cartridges.  Recommended bullet weight, brand, and barrel twist?

I'm considering something in carbine length, maybe a composite lower, 16" barrel, a decent trigger (NO personal experience with a 2-stage trigger yet), and a floating handguard.  I'd like to have the finished unit to be sub 7lbs, or less.

I've enjoyed reviewing and figuring out the "build lists" that many have posted.

Comments and recommendations welcome!

I'd look hard at Black Hole Weaponry's 18" barrel in 6x45.  I've taken a few deer with my 6x45 and you're right... it's more than enough gun.  My load consists of the Speer 80gr SP with 27.0 grs W-748.

VA here also, about an hour SW of you. I just finished my first build in 6.8, the main purpose being a deer rifle. See here: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_4/610897_Just_finished_my_first_build__6_8.html I also think it will be a good rifle for the kids(daughter is 8, son is 11) Easy to handle, light recoil, stock tailored to fit, etc. I do like your idea behind the 6x45 and being able to use .223 parts. I dont have a .223 though so I just went with the 6.8 since I am not worried about interchanging anything. I would however suggest steering away from a composite lower. I personally think the money you save isnt worth it and the weight you save is negligible over the beneifits of strength/longevity of composite. Not knocking it, I just trust standard lowers more. Good luck!

You might want to investigate the 300 Blackout. I would imagine it would make an excellent deer rifle. Uses all .223 parts other than the barrel. Many more options for vendors in 300.
