I was lucky enough to get a BCM bcg while they were in stock. This is how to came out of the plastic.. This is my first AR, but I've seen other bolts and they don't have this coloration to them. I tried cleaning it with some hoppes solvent and a brush but didn't do anything.  Is this normal, or should I contact BCM and see what's up?

looks used, cant really tell without picking it up myself, contact BCM they are a great company.

also edit the title of the thread to "attention BCM" someone should reply as I am pretty sure they are on here.

That is a well-used bolt. The edges are worn a bit from being returned to battery many times. I would be pissed.

They DO test fire all of their bolts, so I'd say it's normal for them.

Post this in the Industry forum.

+1
I have one showing up Wednesday, I'll check and see if it looks as worn as yours.

I've bought 3 BCM BCG's in the past 2 months and none looked like that.  I could tell they had been fired once or twice, but that looks like it's a lot more than a couple of test rounds.

I agree that this should go in the industry thread and/or contact BCM.

I disagree with Invalid.  The lugs are well finished and not even scuffed, not rounded by use, and they DO test fire bolts.  But that is a lot of brass marking for a new bolt.  Definitely check in with the Bravo Company industry forum and see what the BCM folks say about that bolt.

Mine looked like that too. Ordered around 2/18/13. I thought the same thing. I have bolts with hundreds of rounds that don't have that much brass transfer on them. I did some searching and found a thread here (may have been in BCM Industry sub-forum) that dealt with this issue. There were differing opinions but general consensus seemed to be it was normal and G2G. If you hear something from BCM about this I'd be interested in hearing it.

Yeah, I'll be sending them an email with the attached photos and see what they have to say. I'll update when they get back to me.

That's brass, but does look a little excessive for test firing.

I have ordered several over the last year.I had one in october I got that was about as bad as that one.Still are gtg and will buy another once the price goes down

The bolt is hardened, the finish won't take as well to it, looks OK to me.
4/8/2013 3:46:16 PM EDT
[#13]
Looks fine, this batch had a softer finish that tended to absorb the brass marks for some reason. Note the radiusing around the bolt lugs, all even and perfect, its new.

I recieved my bcm bcg today.  it looks just like op pic.  I took pics and will post later if time.  I also pulled the firing pin... nice collar of carbon on there.  is that normal?  its my first ar guys... don't flame me.

anyhow, I cleaned it up and shot my new build.  so much Damn fun!!!

I imagine they run high pressure rounds through them for the high pressure test(HP). Mine looked the same way and I have complete faith in it.

I disagree.

I have another one showing up in the morning from BCM.  I will post pics.

Mine came looking like yours as well. It'll be fine.

When you shoot a high pressured Mil SPec high pressure round that is 70,000 psi it will leave brass shavings and fragments on the bolt. That's just proof that they are doing what they say they are doing. That's obvious to see don't you think if it wasn't normal
that they would not have sent it out like that.

Where the hell are all those recent broken bolt pics when you need them?  OP, yours won't be among them
4/8/2013 7:19:21 PM EDT

Since they're HP tested, could the high pressures cause more brass flow/transfer to the bolt face?

You dont want that one it looks really used  sell it to me so you dont have to deal with the problems.      No really its just how the come.

Looks a little used, but their stuff is GTG. If you go through the trouble of getting a replacement, it will take o a while to get one. Then when you go shooting with it after the first time, it will look exactly the same way it looks now. Just shoot the rifle and enjoy it.

I see nothing wrong with it.. So what if its got a little color to it.
4/9/2013 4:14:11 AM EDT
[#27]
Every BCM BCG I've gotten has had a little brass coloring on both the bolt face and the bottom of the BCG.  I assumed it was either lubricant or rubbing from test firing.  Have one sitting in front of me still in the plastic with that coloration on the bottom of the BCG.  I assumed that they use a copper based lubricant, like Never Seez or the stuff that Glock puts on their new guns, during test firing.  I think it went away during firing and cleaning, but I'll have to check one of my completed rifles to be sure.

Looks normal to me. All of my BCMs had a little brass on them when new.

Clean it up and remove the brass, I bet it will look almost pristine.
4/9/2013 4:23:31 AM EDT
[#29]
Kinda hard to take a pic through the plastic, but this BCG is exactly as you describe.  I'm going to call it normal, and I'm pretty sure that with my other build, I was able to clean that off with a brush and solvent.  I think it's lubricant.

I just wanted to say thanks for threads like this. I really love reading through them and seeing the images.
I'm getting close to finishing my first ar15 build, so a lot of "how things are supposed to look" I'm just clueless about. Threads like this help tremendously!

I'd like to see even more "fresh out of the box" pictures (maybe make a dedicated thread for it?) =)

Mine is "worse" than OPs

Before shot.  She is in an oil bath, now.  I suspect it will clean up nicely, just like my others.

Mine is as bad as Alaska's. I didn't care, I was just happy to get a BCM! I was afraid if I'm complained they would take it away.
How screwed up is that?!
They could have sent me shit in a bag, labeled BCM and I would have thanked them and said "thank you sir, may I have another?".

I really, really need to get off of this computer and leave the AR's alone for a while.

Exactly, it's perfectly normal for a BCM bolt which has been HP tested.  The parkerized finish looks nice and dark so you're seeing a contrast to the lighter brass marks.  Go forth and enjoy your new toy dude.

I hate idiot placards like caution coffee is hot however, BCM might want to label or drop a simple note that the bolt has been fired with a HP round.
Most guys wouldn't realize this if there first AR was a RRA or DPMS.

Makes no real difference to me just might save them some customer service overtime.

How does High Pressure testing actually work?  Do they have a round that is loaded to an a very high pressure and then they shoot it?  Is there a special testing barrel they use?  Do they use this same round to test barrels that are HP tested?

Finally pulled the trigger and joined because of this thread and a recent purchase. I can't get a response from BCM. Check out the burr and such on my BC. I've never had an issue with BCM and I know once i get a hold of them all will be okay.

I think quality control has slipped a little across the board with all of the component manufacturers.
