New to this forum and building my first AR-15.  I have built my lower using PSA lower parts with Magpul grip and stock and have a PSA upper.  Using PSA due to me being from South Carolina.

My question now is on barrels, the purpose of this built is two parts.  I want to build two uppers the first one for home defense and the second for reaching out an touching something.  I am going to build the home defense upper first and trying to decide on a barrel.

PSA has this barrel for sale and would like to get opinions about this type of barrel PSA 16" 5.56mm, 1:7, CMV CL MP, Mid-length, Premium Barrel - Pencil Profile.  I have done some research regarding this Pencil type of barrels and have read some post on this cite.  The biggest advantage is weight. Mixed reviews regarding accuracy.  Disadvantages is that they do not do well when firing a lot of rounds.  What is considered a lot of rounds?

I am not looking for something that can take hair off a fly ass but I would like a barrel that can put a good grouping down range.  Range will be close up to 100 yards but would like to go out to 300 yards.  I will be putting optics up top and iron sights along the side of the weapon for a back up and up close and personal encounters.  The weapon will be used to protect the family, but I will go out occasionally and fire off a few rounds ever now and then to improve my skills.

Thanks to anyone that can provide me advise and fill free to add any additional help as well.  I know I will need a gas block and as well as forearm.  Trying to decide on a longer forearm to cover the glass block or go carbine style.  I hope I am not asking for to much?  Again thank you for any and all help!

What accuracy are you looking for out of an hd weapon?

How many rounds do you plan on expending?

I like lighter barrels.  It will have no problem staying minute of man at 300 yards.

No more than an inch grouping and I would say no more than 100 rounds.  Especially the way ammo is right now.  I do believe in the concept of a well place shot over spraying the target any day.

not a big weight diffrence for me between pencil and hbar  I would take the heavier version myself but i had a lightweight spikes 14.5 that was a great upper.  that is a nother route a 14.5 with a pinned FH  2" shorter and about the same weight and accuracy as the pencil

14" with a pinned FH for the home security build and a 1:9 twist.

20" HBAR for the "reach out and touch someone" build and a 1:7 twist.  Spend your $$$ here.

I will note that the type of ammo is very different between these two builds.

What does it mean when talking about 14.7 barrels being pinned?  I was under the impression that the length had to be 16 inches and you would be ok with a 14.7 along as you had a flash suppressor or brake.

14.7 barrels have to be pinned to he flash hider.  14.7's can be pinned to standard A2 flash hiders.  14.5's will need a longer flash hider like the YHM or Vortex.  If its not pinned, then you've made an SBR.
