All-

Need input on pinning a flash hider to a Spikes 14.5" middy.

I have a smith vortex and a BCM A2. Obviously I can't shoot it first to see which I like. Thoughts between the two?

I'm leaning towards the Vortex. Per the manufacturer, you are to torque to 5-10 ft/lb and then allow it to self tighten as you shoot. Will pinning it mess this up?

Thanks!!

I noticed with the 2 vortex I used on my guns, I just barely put it snug and went to range and fired it say 100 rounds, when I got home It was definitely tighter than I put it. So I would put it to 10ft lbs and then have it welded/pin.

I discussed this with my smith recently. His thought was he can put it on, take it to the range in the back of the store, empty a mag on the range and then pin it.

Yeah ... but I am going to drill and pin and then take to a friend's shop to weld.  I won't take any chances with shooting (or even fully assembling!) an unregistered SBR.

I would say that even that is a slippery slope ... if the wrong people walked in at the wrong time.

That's why he as the gunsmith was going to do it and not me.

Install to 10lb/ft, pin, weld. You're over-thinking this.

Thanks.

That's what I was wondering.  I doubt the force of the gases is much in excess of 10 ft/lb...

I do not see how the flash hider would be able to turn if the pin is inserted with an interference fit. I would write down the distance the drillpress has to go from the surface of the flash hider to the end of the pin; if you ever were to change the flash hider in the future.

Ok,

Once pined and welded...it isn't going anywhere..

10ftlbs is fine...

And as I've read it your gunsmith can build and test fire sbr's...my one guy does quite often...even sometimes here at my place...but the builds were for leo's...

Now, I don't know the law, especially in your area...but I think a smith is aok to do do that...

Anyhow, tighten it and pin/weld it...

I usually don't even bother with saving that extra half inch...it's not worth the trouble...

I get 16" bbl and usually run rainier rmc's that are not that big...

But, I've never seen a muzzle device move ever...either indexed or crush washer...

The only thing I have seen loosen after pinning and welding is the crush washer. The muzzle device shouldn't go anywhere.

The instructions on mine say don't use crush washer for the vortex, never have used one.

Yeah, I would think that there would be no reason to use a crush washer on a non-indexing muzzle device, just snug it up to the barrel, right?

Correct, no washer.

I usually put a bolt in and check barrel length before welding. Better safe then sorry. I strive for 16.375" but will live with 16.125"- 16.5". Sometimes a washer helps bring it out a little more depending on the muzzle device. I'm currently working on a Noveske Afghan barrel with a POF brake. The POF has 2 pieces that allow me to hide shims under it since it needs to be timed. It also helps bring the brake out a little more. It's really been kind of a PITA but it's going to be a cool build.

I definitely checked the length with a bolt in battery ... 16 5/16"

Thanks for all the advice.
