It's about time I started doing my own work instead of paying someone.

What is everyone using for upper blocks ?

Clam shell, Panther Claw, Spike's ?

If using a DPMS style what are you using on the rail ? I'm
assuming your mounting it sideways in the vise.

Please school this old dog

Thanks

Well after destroying my PSA upper, I bought the Promag block set, its the clamshell and I am sure there is something better but it works beautifully.

I used a clamshell set for years.

Now I use the Geisselle Reaction Rod - here

I'll never go back.  Seriously, this thing works so well I can't believe it took so long for someone to field it!

Military Times did a review of it you'll find on Google, and Midway sells it as well, maybe other too.

I've built a LOT of uppers, and the clamshell type vise blocks can't compete with this thing.  I have not used the "pin-in" types that lock into the front and rear pin bosses, but I'm not crazy about torquing on that area to begin with.

That sounds nice. Do you know if there's any issue with other calibers that use a different bolt? Would this work with .308, 6.5, 6.8 etc?

I just bought this http://www.ebay.com/itm/150992738649?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

It seems to work just like the spikes block worx model... I have a sun devil billet upper that I need to put together so I wanted something that wouldn't beat ti up. Had I seen the Geissele. I might have sprung for it...

Let us know how it works for you.  I have been building some .22 AR and my Panther wont work with them due to the .22 barrel being about 1.5" in the upper.

It would work for any other caliber that has the same bolt lug profile as 5.56.  Other than a 300 BLK, I don't know as I don't have a 6.5/6.8/etc.  Geisselle has said before that a .308-specific Reaction Rod is in the works though

6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, etc use a different bolt but it's the "bolt recess" that is different.
The outside dimensions are the same as 5.56

,308AR is a different animal and would not work with a 5.56 Reaction Rod.

That's a nice looking piece.
Prolly a retired machinist turning those out.....not junk.
Can't beat that price either.

Geisselle is out of stock on the reaction rod. I'm planning on getting one though. That other type on ebay is tempting too. I've been very uncomfortable with the amount of torque I've been putting on aluminum parts lately.

I ordered it thursday afternoon and it showed up on Saturday. I won't get to use it for a few weeks. But it's made in the USA and looks like pretty good quality. He had a $20 model too, just a less thick piece on the bottom. But, it was sold out before I got the chance to buy it.

Very good! I'll wait until these are back in stock and order me up one. Thanks guys!

I really like the Spikes and feel it is a little more solid than the clamshell. The ebay deal looks like the best overall and would be great as a starter.   That said, I would like to have one of lthe Geiselle rods for when you really need to crank.

I like my PRI takedown pin action block.  It is useful for AR15 and AR10 applications.  I do clamp it in sideways with a oak block on the top rail for barrel nut installation/removal as I dont like torquing that hard on the take down pin area of the reciever alone.

PRI takedown pin receiver block

Personally I dont know if I like the idea of the action rod.. it scares me but if it's good Bill Geissele then it must be alright.

It's a little "outside the box" although Brownells has had their rendition out for some time. Too spendy, IMO, though.
Geissele pricing is about half and should help popularize this method.

If you're scared, think about this.....
Barrel nut torque = 30-80 ft lbs
Barrel extension torque = 150 ft lbs

I have the DPMS claw.  It was the only thing i could find that would allow me to install my LaRue rail without modification.   I have used it on another upper build and works very well, however the pins fit VERY tightly...

I clamped it between two 2x6's, the barrel nut was very tight and it tried to rotate in the blocks causing the area that meets the magwell to bend outward and split.

I have been using this for both my 5.56 and 7.62 guns.  Clam shell for the A1-2 uppers.

Coincidentally I just bought a set from this guy on ebay too.
I bought the upper and lower blocks from him and actually started a new topic a little bit ago to spread the word, because it's a great deal.
Here's my topic
http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_4/603975_Vise_Blocks__solid_quality_.html

I haven't used the upper yet, but later this week I'll be disassembling an upper so i'll get to test it.  I built a lower this weekend with the lower block and it worked great.
