I have 2 ARs that need front sight bases installed. They are mil spec, "F" Marked front sights.

My question is, can these be tapped, or use set screws instead of taper pins? These have NOT been drilled yet. They are brand new from BCM. Im having trouble finding the jig to use, and cant find a gunsmith in town that can do it in a decent turn around. Everyone is telling me a month or more.

So, can these be drilled and secured with set screws?

Or do you HAVE to use taper pins?

They can be tapped quite easily, i did one last night. One hole is already done for you and a #10-24 tap fits perfectly. The hole is a #27 drill, standard drill for #10-24 is a #26, Drill a second hole straight up centered on the bayonet lug, tap it, and you're golden.

I thought that could work, but I wasnt sure. Now, just need to figure out how to align the sight without the jig.....

I put a carry handle on my flat tops and stand them on the sights, lining up the front sight until the upper doesn't rock on the table.
