Hello everyone, and thanks for having me....This is the greatest collection of information i have ever seen on the web. I have been tinkering with purchasing my first AR for quite some time now. Well, i finally convinced my Mrs. to let me spend the money on one.....Problem is, all my local shops are out of stock and have no idea if or when they may get more in. I was originally going to purchase the Sig M-400, but there is none to be found for a reasonable price now. So that brings me to my next question....I am very good with assembling stuff, so why not build my own? I need some help on what types of uppers, lowers, etc. i should be looking for? As i mentioned, this will be my first AR build, so i don't know a whole lot about what i am looking for. I can say that i plan on using it for home defense, as well as target shooting. I would like to keep my build around $1000.00 or so. Is this possible? Can anyone recommend a good setup or mfgr of the parts i will need? I have around 20 or 30 sites book marked, but as i said...I am not sure which manufacturer is the best for the buck as far as quality and fitment. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

its always nice to build your own that way you can pick and choose what you want...the only problem with that is, finding parts...if you can find a lower receiver, upper or bolt carrier group, you will be in good shape.
on that note, spikes tactical, Daniel Defense, PSA, DPMS are all decent parts. If you find a lower, you'll need a Lower parts kit, Buffer tube, buffer, buffer spring. Lower parts kit will come with all your pins, springs, detents, etc. you will also need a stock...that will complete your lower. Accessories, like magpul are good decent affordable dress up (stock, pistol grip, magazines, etc) Uppers, youll need a stripped upper, barrel, gas block, gas tube, Bolt carrier group, muzzle brake and charge handle. Vltor, BCM, DPMS, DD are another decent company for parts...you'll also need a handguard to cover your gas tube. Youll need to decide if you wanna go carbine, mid length, or rifle gas system. you'll also need to find out if you wanna do a 16, 18, or 20 inch barrel. Barrel choice, Chrome lined, MP tested, 1/7 twist rate, 5.56 nato chamber would be idel. Im sure other people will chime in and cover what i didnt. |

You'll have to be patient and pick up parts as you find them. Some stuff is on backorder for months at next to normal prices (if the store will allow backorders).
Brands - BCM, Daniel Defense, Troy, Magpul, S&W, Rainier, Midwest Industries, PSA also AIM Surplus (carries many brands). WMD Guns has their NiB BCG's on backorder, supposedly shipping in a month. Check Brownells for small parts and backorders. Check with the site sponsors and keep an ear to the ground for when things come in. Check the "email me when in stock button". Good luck on ammo. Check locally. You might find AR's tucked away in your local sporting goods store if you can beat the rush when they get them in. |
Welcome!
Unfortunately you and 87,000 other new forum members just logged in in the past month. The market has dryer up do to the rush. But yes. On a good day, you can build a gun for $1k. But it's going to take work on your part. Keep your ear to the ground on parts. |
